On freebmd i found the marriage of samuel gater and mary dixon in dec 1879 at Westminster. I also found birth reg for charles dixon gater and christopher dixon gater. But no reg for elizabeth d gater abt 1876 and robert gater abt 1871. Nor frances m gater abt 1868 who was with samuel in his 1871 household when it listed him as a widower. If his 1st wife died in 1866 then who is frances mother? mary dixon? If so why wasnt she listed at the same 1871 census address. Can someone look for a Mary Dixon in london on this census.

now i need to connect francis gater bn abt 1854 in staffs with francis gater bn abt 1857 (occupation painter) staffs and had a son francis bn abt 1885 london! and then connect them to my missing gt grandfather john henry gater bn 1893 london. He had a father called frank who was a painter and another rellie called francis (this i got from wedding cert)

I found death reg for charlotte ann gater in 1866 who died in london. Do you think its the same samuel gater as head of all families who perhaps remarried after charlotte died and has been recorded as Gates in 1881 census. Its strange they have same place and date of birth, occupation and a daughter called Frances M born in chelsea.

Hi Marie, If you look at 1861 samuel has a wife called Charlotte A in 1871 no wife and in 1881 wife called Mary looks like he was married twice. 1881 census off Ancestory but looked at image and it looks like Gater wrote bad, Looked at image for 1871 he is a widower June

Hi June The 1881 cenus states the name as gates not gater. Except it has samuel abt 1830 with correct place of birth and has a wife mary. If it was recorded on census as gates that would explain why i couldnt find them on 1881 census on ancestry.com.

Hi people have been really helpful in finding some rellies for me on 1901, 1891,1871 census. Can i be cheeky and ask for help in locating them on 1881 and or 1861 census. They are Samuel Gater abt 1830, Francis Gater abt 1857or 1854, James H Gater abt 1865, Francis M (dau) abt 1869 and Samuel Gater abt 1853, Charlotte Gater abt 1831. hi i remeber seeing a frank gater in 1901 census who was in a workhouse. Would that happen if his family are not in the workhouse? Also why wouldnt they register the birth of one of their children, and why wouldnt he be on a census? Im considering frank and mary as parents of my gt grandfather john henry gater because of the area they live in, the fact on john wedding cert it had father frank gater and a witness was a francis gater.
