I thought the name was Luike. The first letter looks like an L but then again, I have no idea how Q has been written down the years. William T Rushton (the eldest child) was born in Scotby. Both William (the father) and Mary Ann were from Liverpool though. Mary Ann whateverhernameis! was born abt 1822 (from 1881 census). I like the idea of Quirke if it is a Q. The certificate is a bad copy, so it isn't just the scan, sorry. Thanks for your help so far. Andy

I can confirm that when I was at school (I can just remember that far back) in the 1950s, a capital Q was written in roundhand like a letter L. Some of the script fonts (e.g. Commercial Script) will still show this. Jim PS - I remember the original Andy Pandy as well. Happy hunting Jim

You've all been fabulous - I am now fairly convinced that the name is QUIRKE. Thank you very much. Now I am looking for my William Rushton (b abt 1814) and Mary Ann Quirk(e) born abt 1822, both in Liverpool.
