Being a 'printer' in the 19 and 20 centuries was to have one of the most prestigious trades at this time. There are many records for printers and the St Brides Library and the Guildhall in London are just two of the many places where you will find a history. The whole profession was a closed shop, only smashed recently in the 1980's under the Thatcher govt. Suggest you try google searches. All printers did a 7 year apprenticeship so many records are available. Janet

To all you chaps - A BIG THANK YOU for all your suggestions which have given me a shove in what I am hoping is the right directions. I'm going for Georgie Boy - I just get this feeling. I think I would be right in thinking that yes Alfred's dad had died before 1899 but the name is incorrect for what ever reason, so I will use this as a good bases - anything goes wrong I'll blame you lot - only joking. Just had alook for mother Mary ann in 1901 to make sure she's not with anyone called Alfred - and she's not only son Frederick .......but then that would have been too easy.

I'd go with father George I think. It's possible that in the confusion of getting married, he didn't give a name so the registrar just wrote his name again. Labourer is a common occupation, so would be entirely acceptable. Also, if it was Alfred as father, it should state Printer as occupation (even if they did write deceased).

I feel as though we have traced the right chap back in the cenus.......but why Alfred in the MC ( it also seems likely that he would name is first son after his fahter )..........Bum !!

on the census' ALfred is a printer though(91) and what looks like a printers boy (1881)

Thats what I was thinking porkies on the census or the marriage cert I don't know whether to go for the 1891 Alfred Moss & Mary Moss with son Alfred aged 21 b Southwark Printer living in Newington or the 1881 George & Mary Moss with son Alfred b Aldershot

So, we have 2 senarios.... Either - 1) The marriage cert is wrong. or 2) The 1901 census is wrong. Either case is a strong possibility. (Ann - google 1901 census decoder :) )

No wonder you couldn't find then in 1871 Esta - the page is ripped lol George being in the Army explains the Irish daughter I think.

I don't suppose the wittness on the MC would give any clues !

Yes - that the family I followed - couldn't see them in 1871 but then there was a daughter born Ireland in 1874 ( so might be there ) ....they were on the '61 in ALdershot as george is a soldier !! (Battery A, Royal Horse Artillery)

This is the only birth that could be in Aldershot Birth Sep 1868 Moss Alfred Farnham.2a 93 It's probably the son of George.
