In case you want to send the information to a Floppy: 1. Put the Floppy in the slot in the front of your PC. 2. Find the file you wish to back-up, place your mouse over the file and RIGHT click. 3. A drop down box will appear - click on SEND TO. 4. Another small sreen will appear, click on 3 1/2 INCH FLOPPY. The file should now be copied to the A DRIVE. To check to make sure it backed up correctly: 1. Click on START. 2. Click on MY COMPUTER - there may be an icon on your desktop already for MY COMPUTER, too. 3. Click on A DRIVE and you should see the file. Just an FYI: Keep in mind, if a Floppy is left in the PC - the next time you restart your PC you'll get a blank screen that the PC can't start - just pop the Floppy Disk out and the PC will start normally.....I have no idea why this happens but it does - most people don't realize the problem and think there is a problem with the PC.

Yes, give it a go Val. You can always get the cds and we can burn one together tomorrow. Looks like someone has offered to help you by private mail with the PAF back up. Jean I have that book its a load of rubbish, I cannot work some of the things out in it either. think the kind people on here are much better at talking you through things.

Well after having this puter for 6 months and wondering what the four little boxes were on the side I found out all I really have to do to copy something is highlight and drag it to the box. It opens and snatches the file in and burns it. Thats after 6 months of asking teenage son how to do it and being told 'You wont understand mum'. My sister and I sat at our respective puters two days ago and worked it out (150 miles from each other) whilst holding the phone. It knackered us but we were so thrilled when we both saw that we were burning a cd of all our docs! Its easy to do with familytreemaker. You put in a rewritable cd, click on the file, bac up to cd, click and away it goes and it then shoots out of the coffee cup holder when its done.

Valerie, thankyou for that. It is so comforting to know that I'm not the only one. I keep reading it over and over again and I just can't make sense of it. Mind you I am cracking on a bit lol.

It makes it a lot easier when someone else is working through it with you, doesnt it. Especially when they dont just get fed up and snatch it away and do it themselves! you have 4 boxes on the side Heather wow that sounds important. I thought my PC was quite new but it is obviously obsolete already. I am terrible really I have a Photo printer thingy slot in my printer but have never used it, dont know why I buy these things really.I cannot even time any programmes with the video recorder its so frustrating, I have to let a tape run through 8 hours if I am going out instead of maybe 30 minutes.

Oh Val, they arent 'real' boxes, just little icons of 4 boxes, one for music, one for docs, one for film and one for copying one disc to another. I have spent 6 months shifting the icons around the screen when they get in the way and youngest son who is still living with us, telling me not to delete them but not explaining what they were. Well, he looked choked when I told him me and his auntie had sussed it! Your photo printer will be really handy for you. I take our little disc things to Boots and have to stand there with a full audience doing them. Oh thats good Jean, its easy on there isnt it! I couldnt believe it when I actually did it. Have you also sent all your info to a Home Page? You must do that and have your stuff on the net (make sure you click privatise living people when you do it.) Thats the next thing Val, you will have to get a familytreemaker2006 program and do your own website - well familytree does it all for you, you just click next a few times. Now, must get to bed, up at 6 again, gawd I hate getting up.

Judy, I do know why you can't start your computer up with a floppy in, and it goes back to the very early days of PC's when you could 'boot up' from a floppy if you so desired. You still can. So if you have a floppy in when you turn your computer on it will still try to boot up from it. But if the floppy doesn't contain an operating system, well, it can't! Kate.

Oh thanks for that Kate, no end of people have told me about the floppy causing that problem, but no one ever knew why!

Heather you are lucky to have your kids around to help you mine live too far away, so have had to learn the hard way. Its lovely when you work out something isnt it??? My son was here a while ago and I was saying its so annoying to come of the site I am on to look at another and he said Why dont you open a new Window you can guess what I said cant you??? I was amazed when he showed me how to do it . Jean I am glad this thread has been some help to you, sounds like you will do a better job than me good luck

Val, believe me my son does NOT help me, he has no patience, time or interest in doing so, just wants me off as quick as possible. No, as I said, I get more done by ringing my sister 150 miles away - shes as bad as me - but by sitting in front of our puters and talking it through together we have learnt lots. night night Heather , I dont go to bed till about 1 I also sell stuff on ebay so I shoot from here to there all night .
