I am looking to buy a Family History softwear package and there seems to be so many on the market so I could do with some advice! My pc is Windows 98 with 128 megabit memory. I am not 100% pc literate (but learning all the time!) so something simple would be best for me! Thanks |

Hi Lyndsey This question crops up every couple of weeks. Everybody will tell you that the one they use is the best because that's what their used to or it's free to download, do a search for threads containing software and you will see dozens of replies on this subject. If you are going to buy a program the general concensus of opinion seems to be Family Tree Maker. Ron www*genealogyprinters*com |

Thanks Ron Funnily enough, my friend (who is more pc literate than me & is going to be helping me!) & I were looking at Family Tree Maker on the Internet last night & remarking how good it looked. The fact that it is so widely used is a strong reccommendation. However , being more forward thinking than me, she did suggest I find out how easy it is to upgrade from the Beginners Pack 1. Do you have to buy the next level package or is there something you can just 'add on'? Cheers Lyndsey |

I had the starter edition of Family Tree Maker to begin with, I upgraded to the standard version online and it was really simple, they just sent me a code to type in which unlocked the additional features. Sam x |

Having been doing my Family History for nine months now I’ve proved to myself that it’s not just a passing fad! I think the Family Tree Maker 2006 Beginners Pack 1 is the one for me! Having made that decision I’m eager to get going , although I confess to being a bit apprehensive because my knowledge of computer packages in general is not very good and I can be rather dense sometimes! Thank Goodness for friends who can help you out! Regards Lyndsey |

Sorry, it was the de luxe edition Who do you think you are. Is it not on there anymore? Have a look at the my-history website - it has a chart comparing them. |

Hi Heather Yes, the 'Who do you think you are' deluxe edition is still on Amazon, costing £24.95, but it is the 2005 version. Thanks to everyone who has responded to my original query. With so many packages to choose from I really am spoilt for choice! |
