Thank you for adding this. How sad that they were institutionalised for so long and Nerissa was buried in such a simple grave. Reigate/Redhill are neighboroughing towns - I don't know where the borders are but it was definitely her grave. Thanks Claire

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerissa_Bowes-Lyon says When Nerissa was 22 and Katherine was 15, ***they were removed from their family home and placed in the Royal Earlswood Hospital in Surrey - where Nerissa spent the next 46 years.*** The sisters reportedly had the mental age of six and were largely unable to speak. Three of the Bowes-Lyon sisters' cousins were institutionalized as well, all classified as mentally disturbed: Idonea, Etheldreda, and Rosemary Fane. Nerissa Bowes-Lyon was buried in Redhill, Surrey.

Nerissa Bowes-Lyon is buried in a churchyard in Reigate, Surrey! I found her grave last week whilst looking for my birth grandmother's grave. I noticed the surname and posted details on another thread at the time. It is a very small, simple headstone - no sign of grandeur at all. I wonder how she ended up in Reigate? Claire

Mary Oooops! Sorry! Always thought it was her sisters, Rose and thingy, who were 'put away'. (Surely the names are Glamis, not Glennis???!!!) Olde Crone

Nerissa and Katherine Bowes-Lyon were her nieces, not her sisters.

Ah yes! The Queen Mum's two embarrassingly simple sisters, who were locked in the Attic for most of their lives.....we had all forgotten about them, hadn't we? Olde Crone.
