Whittlin on a stick is what I did as a kid-maybe this wood carving larkm is in my genes-its basically grabbing a stick whilstout walking ,getting your penknife out and making something from the stick-or decorating it with carving.....im only 38,and used to do this when I was 10.......now Ive found my 3rd great grand uncle and his 5 childern (first cousins 4 times removed) were wood carvers and cabinet makers.

If the telly and the pooter hadn't been invented, just think of the interesting things that you would have been able to master instead: Whittlin' on a stick (whatever that is) Clog dancing Tatting (my great aunt used to do that one) Makin' summat out o' nowt Lacing up your stays Feeding a family of 14 on one carrot, three onions, a bucket of lard and a dry crust What would the rest of you like to master? Pass the remote control, someone.

Well Alter, I think you have to write that book - it surely would be worthwhile.

Have considered that Heather.........heres another snippet I found a few days ago- agog at th lack of info on the net,I did notice one little detail- someone has gone to town on recording their family and others along with a village cricket team.........now this cricket site has photos of the teams in the 19th century ,and on one page he has detailed th individuals and whre the photo was taken.......3 of them were taken in this village Edwinstowe......and who was the photographer ????.......... my Walter albert Tudsbury !!....wasthere anything they didnt do ?? LOL

Alter you paint such a lovely viviv picture of this family. You can just imagine the cottage with smoke coming out the chimney and piles of wood and half made furniture stacked everywhere, music wafting out the window whilst one of the brothers painted and the sister baked. Merry, My Tudsburys were freaks of nature!! They built a steam engine ,after hand making all the parts,perfect in every detail,and it travelled from Edwinstowe to Clipstone down the road- one of the siblings did very lifelike models of animals in snow !,....they could turn their hand to anything -church lecturns,pews,grand staircases,cabinets adourned with rabbits ,grapes,pheasnts etc.....incredible stuff....one of them even got into pyrotechnics...they must have been a sight to behold in the village...!

Ah, but what about if you played a prairie fork? As far as I know there was only Vals ancestor producing them. He must have made a mint with cornering the market.

I was thinking about where they got their Victorian Instruments from.......It's one thing to make a violin, but another to make one that PLAYS!! Some statistics from 1881 census: Musical Instrument Maker 231 Of those, based in London 160 Violin/Fiddle Maker 71 In London...............46 Piano(forte) Maker 3392 In London..............3019 Flute Maker 56 In London....50 So, it looks as if most instruments were made in London. They may have been hawked round the country by itinerant salesmen (not sure about the pianos though!!) Once a village had a few instruments I suppose they would be passed around when people died.......??? I'm not saying there were NO cabinet makers who were capable of rustling up a viola in their spare time, just that I don't think that would be commonplace! Merry
