Can anyone suggest why someone born and brought up on the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire border should suddenly show up on the 1901 census as being in a home for Inebriates in Battle, East Sussex? Any ideas why he should be so far away from home? The home for Inebriates does fit in - this particular person had a nickname of 'boozer'! At this time his family were still in the same village they had always been - apart from his 8 year old son who I can't find a record of anywhere. All suggestions greatfully received - we can't work it out.

Perhaps he got lost on the way home from the pub one night... Liz ;-)

Georgina Thanks for the suggestion. I don't know if he was in the army or not! So the next question I have to solve is - where do I find army records?

In answer to Liz - if he got lost on the way home from the pub he'd only gone about 250 miles about of his way!

Have you checked out all his siblings? You'll probably find he has a married sister who lives down that way.

He was at home with his family in 1891 - where he should have been.

I always look at siblings - it's surprising what you can find. I have one family in Lincs that seem to play musical chairs - they swap children at every census.

Well, could just be the case that the home was the only suitable one that would take him. He may have been placed by a charitable organisation/church? Have you tried googling for information about the place?

Thank you for all the suggestions - and offers of help. You've certainly given me some ideas of where else to go looking.

I notice all the people in the home were from a long way away and all over the place.....(one lost his way in Melborne, Australia!) Merry

Thanks for the positive christening date Georgina. Also - Heather has just suggested sailors - could this be an 'all forces' home?
