Think I agree, Peter. I should have known anyway, there's no such thing as a free lunch! Christine |

The Ancestry subscription is worth having if you are not already a subscriber, but don't bother with the 'free' cd's. have yet to hear from anyone who has found them to be of use. For those on a budget FTM 2005 for £9.99 looks like a bargain Retail box including the complete full Family Tree Maker 2005 program and a 30 day subscription to ancestry.co.uk. Contents :- # The Family Tree Maker 2005 CD # 30 days subscription to Ancestry.co.uk (£15 value) # Family trees of the ten celebrities featured in the first BBC TV series of Who Do You Think You Are # Video clips from the first BBC TV series of Who Do You Think You Are # Online Who Do You Think You Are guide to researching your family history |

See what you mean, Heather. Used to be undecided now I can't make up my mind!! This is going to depend on the info on the free discs, I think. I'll check out details again, better go and finish cooking! Christine |

I upgraded from the 2005 to 2006 - no prob, but to be honest I dont see a lot of difference in the two editions. Check out my-history website for the comparison chart |

Thanks Heather for that advice - I'll copy and follow it through. Sorry not to have replied earlier, I actually got some work work done as opposed to tree work!! Unique for me!! By the way, if any of you have discs you don't want please let me know. The 2005 pack (which I just can't find since our house move) had a disc for various Scottish (and maybe English) books with historical references. I found references and full testament about the Clan leaders who signed the Act of Covenant and all the martyrs. I have the Book of Scots Worthies but it's really old and heavy, reading online was so much simpler! I'm thinking of getting the 2006 version actually as it will be useful to have the Scottish Parish disc, and since I have discovered that I can add the period of free Ancestry to the end of present subscription it looks like a bargain! Just hope it's compatible with the 2005 Christine xx |

Well, you get 6 months free ancestry worth what £35 - so deduct that from the price and you didnt get a bad deal, did you - what with all the other bits. I mean I wouldnt bother with the cds but then you are getting the program plus the dvds, the manual, the charting companion (which I think they charge £14 for) all for £20! Dont worry, you werent screwed. It seems a good deal. |

Margaret I bought the 2005 one with all the discs which I didnt really want and the free ancestry sub, but it was only £20 including postage from Amazon so I thought it was a very good price.I think it would have paid you to look around first, I believe the Genealogy site sell them cheaper than that !!!, wait till someone comes along with more info |

BC Im sure Jane got a mac version? Can you go to my-history website and see what they have. Christine to do the website (it is called Homepage - but it is the whole site), click on internet options and create family homepage - it will lead you through, click on the privatise living persons bit and then it uploads stuff while you choose your layout etc for your first page of the site. Do not try to make a gedcom or anything complicated, its not necessary, just keep clicking as it leads you through. It seems to be private for about 6 weeks and then google picked mine up. This is handy, cos you can go through it deleting anything you dont want shown. |

I am so, so jealous! If anybody knows where I can get one for an Apple Mac I would be so grateful. The only one I can find is Reunion and that is for about £75...way, way out of my budget. BC |

I had it backed up, Heather, but of course without the FTM disc I couldn't get my back up to open till I got my laptop back. I've never had so many contacts since I started as I had the two weeks I was without the info - typical! I didn't know about creating a home page etc, I'll do that now actually, as it is good to have another source. My tree on genes is what I transferred in January but have done lots of work since then. I transferred my tree to tribalpages - what a mess I made of that! I tried to remove all the living people from my FTM one and did the reverse! Fortunately it's password protected so no-one can see it but must find out how to delete it Christine |

Do make sure you back up all your info on to a cd from your FTM. Then if your puter does crash, you have the info safe to feed back into the program when your puter is sorted. Also do create your family home page on the internet - click on internet options - this puts all your info into a sort of book form on the website free of charge, so you then have it in at least 3 places. |

UPDATE I rang ancestry and they kindly organised it so I now do have 30 days free on the site. Woohoo! |

I've used the 2005 since I started this in january 2005. However, during our house move last August I have somehow mislaid the actual disc so will use the info kindly supplied by you all to get a new one just in case I need it in future - worth a tenner. My computer needed a new hard drive but shop (small local) was excellent and I didn't lose info. However, it's given me a wake up call! Only thing I wondered, how good is the Scottish Parish Records disc on the 2006? I saw somewhere about North of Scotland disc but can't remember where or how to get it, will try googling just now while it's in mind! The other disc set I would like is the Scottish 1881 Census. I know this census is free on IGI but someone found info for me that is simply not on IGI - or rather, that I can't find on IGI. Any advice greatfully received Christine |

I just got mine from TWR...it came the next day but...you can't have the 30 days free trial if you have already had a free trial...you all prob knew that but I was hoping! I am now going to reread all the other tips about merging and various other buttons talked ...wish it would rain so I'd have an excuse to sit all day on computer and not take the kids to the beach! ate |

Heather | Report | 31 May 2006 09:13 |
Well it certainly isnt on their online site. I can only think that was a localised one off offer that Jenny found. As you say, TWR Computing has it for £9.99 with the months free sub to ancestry. |

Well even a 30 day sub is worth at the full price, what nearly £6? Not sure where they got the £15 from? Oh well done Kath, enjoy! |
