Hi Val, the cert was the right one - birth cert for hubbys GGM - 1875 - unfortunately the mother, Jane Gordon formerly Mulholland shows up in Liverpool as born 1835 in Ireland - great. The father, Charles Gordon is also from Ireland, a joiner. Their first kiddie was born 1861 in Ireland so they must have come over to Liverpool after that - can find them on the 1871. Why the hell didnt they have to put towns on those census in Liverpool - I mean the place was over-run by the Irish you think they would have bothered to categorise it a bit. Oh BTW this is the family of the Gordon who died in the Titanic working in the engine room.

Still not arrived , wish they would hurry up. But then again he would have been in when the Postman came ,so lucky really .We are a sneaky lot arent we???? John I never realised they dont charge for ref checks, I would not have so many wrong ones if I had known that ,am going to order them from the local offices in future thanks for that.

Hi Valerie, hope your certificates get to you quickly. Do you order from the GRO? It's usually a lot quicker you know ordering from the register office local to the event, plus, i've never been charged anything at all if the checking points i've given don't match up with the details on the certs from local registrars. Personally, I think it's a bit of a rip off to charge you anything at all when you've given the checking points as well. Anyway, all the best John

Hi there I just tell my husband that I could be smoking, drinking and gambling. That shuts him up.

Suzanne , it is frightening how much we spend without realising it, I reckon lots of people have gone bankrupt or into debt over this family tree stuff. After all how you can carry on sometimes without proof. I was really good at saving till I started this , now I spend that and more on Certs. It is an addiction.

I dont like being sneaky really , but you are right he has always bought New Cars no second hand ones for us, even though I was quite happy with the one I had ,he had to change it. The trouble is its not a small amount I added it up the other day how many Certs I had bought, because I am afraid I like to get them all, Birth Marriages Deaths I just love to read them.I find them fascinating, and you get lots of clues on them sometimes, like witnesses. So I have a huge folder under the Desk hidden , and I sneak them out and have a little look now and then. Dont get me wrong he isnt mean , but it is a bit awkward at the moment.

Surely you guys don't need to justify the relatively small amount you spend on your hobby? I could think of dozens of pursuits which cost more - and let's face it, a round of drinks in the pub costs more than a certificate.

I know what you mean, i order a couple every other week or try to so that the first will arrive after i have sent the others off, i get excited after i have posted them then depressed after the first few days cos i dont know when i will get them lol hubby knows you have to pay for them but what hes spent on cars in the 11 yrs we have been together we could of paid our mortgage off a number of times, so i think he just stays quiet lol anyway the certs im waiting for are for his mothers paternal side anyway. and hes got no interest in family history either.

Jacqueline Report 4 Jun 2006 18:03

Blimey, I'm not sure how to take all of that - suggest you all go off and have a cold shower, then concentrate on dead relatives! Hope that tax return comes soon, Valerie. Isn't tax a pain... Jacquie
