This thread is great, I hope loads more people add to it. I needed a smile today and I've certainly got one now! Actually, going back to Dad's Aunt Edie....when I was trying to locate her (before I realised she was called Bertha Alice lol!), I could only find a spare Uncle Frank. I told my Dad and we did wonder for a little while if Uncle Frank and Aunt Edie were one and the same. Fortunately not;) Mandy :))

My dad's family had a habit of being known by their middle names, and he didn't always realise this - took me ages to find his grandfather until I figured out that the Tom Jones he'd told me about was the same as the David T Jones on the census. Then there was 'California Jack' Evans who was actually Lewis Evans. On the other side, everyone had assumed that Uncle Wally was Walter until I found that he was actually Wallace. The current bunch include Pode, Mole, Womble and Golden Wonder, although fortunately those are strictly for domestic use and don't appear on any official documents!

Hi I have an Aunt who is called Gloria Marigold because her mum was so poor when she born when my nan held her she prayed for Glory's sake marry gold. But every one calls her Tess. Mel

These are some strange things we have in the family for calling people, it's quite simple when you know who each person is and what the family calls them but out siders or more distent rellies don't have a clue. Fan Ann (a pet name I was called) Bizzy Lizzie (another pet name I was called) 'The Baby' (what I call my brother or cousins daughter) 'The Kids' (what we call my brother and 2 cousins OR just the 2 cousins) squert (a pet name for my brother) Whistler (pet name for 1 of my uncles) Bill (Donold) Nan (Rhiannon) Dinah (Jocelyn) Dai (Ernest) Pip (Phillip) H (Howell) Loubby (Louise) Nell (Elizabeth) Charles (Absalom)

my 2 year old daughter has the unfortunate nickname of 'Meatball' because when i called her 'you little sausage' she insisted 'I'm not a sausage mummy i'm a meatball' and when i asked her 'whats your baby sister then' she answered 'oh she's broccoli!!! Caroline

what a strange lot we have ,Glad I started this now it has given me some info into what names to look for in my family , that I had not thought of thanks everyone.

My mother in law was always talking about her 'Aunt Ettie'.When I asked what was it short for she insisted that was her proper name. I have now discovered her name was Esther. A friend couldn't see the problem when she called her son Justin Case!! Poor lad.

Really enjoying the giggle, from my husband' family we have Ada Lucy Tooth ( 'ad a lucy tooth). But I have to confess about my daughter. We named her Alison Tooth. The hospital tried to put Baby Tooth on her card but we quickly stopped that. BUT she was infact Miss A Tooth, we had only ever referred to the baby as Alison...ooops She is now married but has kept her name Tooth so she can't mind too much. Val

My dads name is Reginald but he's known to the family as Ben - no-one seems to know why!! And my father-in-laws full name is Arthur Henry Davidson Thompson and everyone calls him Dave

This thread has given me a lot of laughs this morning. I had a great aunt who became an unmarried teacher in a private school. However her name was Emma Louisa and when she was a girl her brothers called her lemon squeezer. She prefered Louie.

I SPENT AGES TRYING TO TRACE MY GREAT AUNT JEAN TO FIND SHE WAS ACTUALLY MARGARET JANE. MY GREAT GRAND MOTHER WAS SARAH JANE BUT GOT SALLY. MY SONS INITIALS ARE B.A.D BUT IF MY PARTNERS MOTHER HAD HER WAY HE WOULD HAVE BEEN B.A.L.D. AND MY BROTHERS INITIALS ARE T.C.P. AND ONE OF THE STRANGEST CHRISTIAN NAMES I HAVE FOUND FOR ONE OF MY ANCESTORS IS ISREAL.

This is interesting and Funny. Glen was your Titch's surname Turner by any chance? I was at school with a guy whos surname was Tampion you can see what that got changed to a lot. My grandmother's name was Marion but she was apparently known as Billy so anyone else looking for the same tree might be a bit lost thinking it's a male. My aunt was called Stevie and her name was Sonia. No-one knows why either went by these names especially since they don't have anything to do with middle names either. Why male names is the question I'd be asking. Dad had aunts Vi (actually Minnie Viola so it turns out), Pat (Esther), there's an uncle Jim which I'm still tring to work out. Mums side Aunt Queenie was actually Mildred, her father was Earnest middle name Wallace but was called John and Jack amoungst other names. When my sister was a baby she couldn't say my name and called me Dodo. Gypsyjoe

Just discovered we have a Private Godfrey in the family. And even more intriguingly, a lady (?) called Ellen Bissex Chandler.
