Any ideas why I keep losing my connection to the i

I dont know whether its coincidence or not but added extra memory the other day to my PC, now and then I get a loud clicking noise in the Right hand Speaker and at the same time my Internet connection stops, and everything freezes any ideas please HELP HELP HELP. |

Hi Valerie, Have you run a disc check on your pc to check and fix errors also sometimes it helps to restart your pc when you have probs. yvonne |

Hi Valerie, Firstly - does your computer recognise your new memory ? Try reseating it in slot, make sure the clip holding it in position is secure. Try taking out the new memory board, I assume your connection was ok before extra memory added, if your connection is ok and doesn't drop, you may have a faulty memory chip Regards, Ralph |

Val, my puter is really slow today and I know a couple of people have contacted me saying they have been constantly cut off last couple of days. Im wondering if its a general thing with the network. |

Val I am extremely untechy, so dont know about the extra memory thing, but this was happening to me recently, when I was still on dial-up. If you are on dial up, are you with BT for your phone line rental, or are you with someone else? I stopped using BT and went over to someone else and then started having lots of problems with my Internet connection, sometimes being cut off 5 times in 5 minutes - expensive, with 5p being the minimum dial up charge. I moaned to my daughter about this, saying I thought it was a plot on behalf of the new phone supplier to get more money out of me. My daughter is a BT operative and told me its not that, its because BT rent all these lines to other phone providers, but in busy times, BT ensures that BT customers always have a line and if there arent enough lines, then other phone line providers get their number of lines cut. I sincerely hope that made sense!LOL. It drove me onto Broadband, anyway - and its fantastic!! Olde Crone |

No OC I think Val is on broadband already and so am I. Its just the last couple of days that have been a real pain. Ive noticed my broadband suddenly pops up to show its redialling when I didnt even know it had gone. And GR is so SLOW. Several people are moaning about it. I reckon all the technicians are watching footie and not spotting some sort of problem on the network. |

My puter used to do something similar. Eventually traced it to a bad connection on the phone line. We went around the house and shook every plug. It was on the kitchen extension. |

That reminds me.. Ive only had Broadband a couple of weeks and when it came I was so excited, I installed it MYSELF instead of getting someone else to do it. I followed the instructions very carefully, which emphasised that you needed to have a router at every junction and join - I needed five, they only supplied two, so rushed out and bought 3 more. Didnt work.I tried it with 4, with 3, and with 2 - still didnt work. In the end, I found it worked with just ONE router, on the main phone box! Completely contrary to what they say in the instructions. No wonder I can never do anything techie. Olde Crone |

Olde Crone When you say router, do you mean filter? The trick with filters is that there must always be a filter between any phone and the incoming line and your computer connection and the incoming line. If you have only one phone connection, you need only one filter. Where you have extension phones it depends how they are connected to the main socket, as to how many filters you need. In my experience, adding filters where you don't actually need one does no harm. |

One minute this is quick as a flash and next minute its like the bad old days on here, waiting and waiting. I am having trouble with other sites too. It occurred to me there has been a couple of Microsoft downloads in last couple of days, hasnt there. |

Peter I meant filter of course! (Told you I'm not techie) I have two, Bt phone extensions, plus the main phone in, and a plethora of trailing, connected-up extension lines. My computer is attached, by virtue of three trailing, connected wires to one of the upstairs BT extension sockets. I have the one and only filter on the main line coming into the house. Shouldnt work, according to the blurb, but it does. Olde Crone |

Hi all Thought it was just me spent the last hour cleaning up temp files etc. Tried again could not connect. Shut down restarted and finally made it. I also have had some microsoft downloads the last couple of days and keep getting some weird messages about having to shut down sorry etc do not know whether to bother sending reports any thoughts on that anyone??? |

Just got back gave up and watched Big brother for a while Grace is out, I too wondered about the new downloads from Microsoft as last time they messed my PC up so I uninstalled them and it was fine. I am on Broadband with Tesco and I do have the Filter thingy. My Husband said it did click into place ,the memory thing. What is strange is when the Phone connection goes I get a loud clicking noise in the right hand speaker so I have unplugged it.But I dont understand the connection between that and my problem thanks to all you lovely people with your suggestions, and none rude either!!!!! How would I know if the new memory is faulty when I look at that list thing I have double the memory I had before so I would have imagined that means there is no problem with it or am I wrong ??? thanks |

Hi Valerie, The problem is unlikely to be anything to do with your new memory. Broadband connections can be very sensitive to electrical interference and/or iffy cabling. 1) You must have a filter on every telephone socket that has a phone plugged in. 2) Do you have a burglar alarm with back to base monitoring , if so you need a 'central filter' that requires a profesional install. 3) You mentioned extension leads everywhere. If they are for phones they are not good with broadband. 4) With the clicking in the speaker when your broadband drops, it may be electrical. Does it coincide with an appliance switching on or off, for instance the fridge. Best to plug your modem into a surge protector and then the power. Paul |

Funnily enough, my internet connection dropped out about half an hour ago whilst on here. Booted up the laptop and that was OK. Both through the same Wanadoo broadband livebox. Rebooted this one, ran Norton diagnostics and I'm back on. Wierd! Never had that happen before. |

evening Paul I do have a seperate phone line just for the PC its a completely different number to the home phone.I only have 1 extension lead its a Power Surge one, goodness I do sound organised and intelligent dont I ???I am wondering if its that Microsoft again.Is there a way of knowing if the memory is okay as I said I do seem to have extra memory in that box thing ??? thanks so much for replying. |

Hi Valerie, By the way you don't need a separate line for broadband, you can use the phone and the internet at the same time unlike dial-up - you could save some money there. Your connections sound OK - you are doing the right things with your connections. Although you dont need any filters on your phones if they are on a separate number to your broadband, no filter on the broadband either. I don't think the new updates from Microsoft would be the problem either. I have updated mine and have no problems. When the broadband drops do the lights on your modem change, either go off, start flashing, or change colour? If so what. If there is no change to the lights on the modem then the problem is your computer, if there is a change in the lights then it is most likely a line fault or your modem. Although first make sure that all the connections are plugged in securely. Paul |
