I expect the dressmaker is the one......maybe her hubby went off with someone else and she was never a widow? I would have felt happier if I had found James and Mary Reed in 1891 as separate people to your widow and her daughter, but I can't find them........probably only because they have not been very helpful with their place of birth in 1881! Wouldn't put anything past these 'strait' laced victorians, widow sounds better than 'abandoned wife'!! He is definately dead by 1892 as he is down as deceased on the marriage cert of his daughter, unless they continued the charade of course!!! I was beginning to worry that I had they correct birth cert of Mary Elizabeth Reed 1873, but I am sure I have she is down as 19 on her marriage in 1892 which puts her at 1873, and i can find only one Mary Elizabeth Reed born in St Saviour Southwark for that year, love it when they have middle names, makes finding them easier!! Fuzzy, I have a similar couple in my tree, my great-great-grandparents (originally from Horsleydown, strangely enough) who are living a few doors apart in 1891, she is a 'widow' and he 'married' (but without a wife). Their daughter's death cert dated 19th Nov 1892 describes the father as 'deceased' but I have not found a death for him between then and the 1891 census. Kate.

thanks for that Kate, it is nice to know I am not alone!! I have just trawled though the complete images of death indexes from his marriage in 1876 up to 1880, no sign of him. closest I came was a William Reed aged 41 in St Saviour in 1880, and from what Merry found he should be 49, why do we all do this?!!! have bruises from banging head against the wall today!!

Maybe he knocked off a few years when he met Mary, in case his advancing years put her off?? Merry

If it was me I would probably try that cert! (and then regret it!) You did tell me the Lambert thing, but I couldn't remember the original difficulty, so wasn't sure quite what you were talking about! LOL Hoped you wouldn't notice, but as you mention it!!!........lol Merry

Hi Merry, LOL!!! Think will get the certificate, whats money?! Will remind you, groom Richard Lamberts father on marriage undecipherable, sent you and Dea the certificate and neither of you could read it, We found a baptism of a Richard lambert in Llandogo and father was Carthaliner. We then decided the old vicar was hard of hearing and thought he said Linah and thats what the cert said!! Dea found site on the net about a Lambert Castle in Yorkshire, built by a Carthaliner (too young to be mine), but she was convinced there was a tie in as there was evidence of Lambert members visiting from Llandogo to Yorkshire. You suggested that I scan the certificate and send it off to the Gwent Records Office, remember the bit about me being the poor English girl throwing myself at Welsh mercy etc... Well they replied today, saying cant understand why the GRO couldn't read it, the grooms fathers name is Isiah Lambert. so back to the drawing board, just sent a mail to Dea, as she wanted to know of any developments. thing is I cant find another Richard lambert born in 1808 Llandogo with a father Isiah, now wondering if he has guessed at the name and it is a case of welsh pride and getting one over on the GRO.....clutching at straws again Merry!!
