Hi Elaine, don't worry about it, I would have had to do this some time or another, better get it over with now. It's an experience! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Sue, I've added a new thread now, thanks for trying to help me. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Brenda, yes I did phone Sue, I tried saving it in my documents as well as desk top, it's the actual saving of it that is the problem. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Shelley is no nearer with this. The problem seems to be that she cannot save the attachment sent from genes. She's using hotmail. As Im not familiar with hotmail account I cant help her here. No problem with the gedcom from genes as Shelley forwarded it to me and I can open it etc using Legacy. Shelley it may be worthwhile to start a new thread asking for advice on saving attachments from hotmail account. Sue |

Was wondering how things were going - feeling very guilty saying you must back it up somewhere other than on GR - and you seem to have had so many problems trying to do it. Hope its now sorted. Will be worth it in the end !!!! |

Hi Brenda & Sue, thanks for that. I have just sent you a message Sue. Computer went on a very go slow, had to switch it off and pop out for a bit. My son is complaining that he lost on his Nintendo game I asked him was that all he had to worry about, considering I had been fighting with my tree all day. |

Hi Elaine, I have done all that and used wizard, wizard cannot find a ged file. I even got the wizard to look for a paf file, which it found then imported, once imported, the few names I had put in myself disappeared and there were no names from the tree from GR. It was blank. Have GR sent me the tree in the correct format in the first place? I even tried it on Personal Ancestral File, it said the ged file was invalid. |

- and if that doesn´t work then try this. I saved the file received from GR on my desktop. When I doubleclicked on the file icon is asked me what program I wanted to open it with - I selected Family Tree Maker and it opens. I can´t see why this doesn´t work with Legacy. |

Shelley - am back for a bit. Cant quite understand why you are having problems so have just exported my tree from GR to see what happens. The email I received says - the gedcom file has been attached to this email. - and a attached is a file called something like Smith family tree.ged RIGHT click this file and click on SAVE AS then save the file with whatever name you want - whereever you want. DO NOT double click the attachment and try to open it as this point. Then try to import this file into Legacy. Let us know how you get on. |

Hi John, thanks for your help. Mine is saved as williams family tree on to my desktop. I tried to save it in my documents, first it says I cannot save that web page, then I look again and it is there. Do I have to save it as a particular file when saving? Options are: Web page complete - web archive single file - web page html only and - text file. Or when I got to legacy and click on file - import which option do I choose? I was choosing Gedcom file, is that the right choice? When I have chosen gedcom file, the file is no where to be seen. I just tried the wizard to look for it, and the wizard couldn't find it. |

Hi Shelley. I find it easiest to save downloaded data files to a sub-folder of My Documents. I have several sub-folders for different purposes including one called Family Tree. I also created a folder called C:\COPY where I download software files and other miscellaneous stuff. When you downloaded your GEDCOM file from GR you would have been asked what to name the file and where to file it. I always try to give GEDCOM files descriptive names and include today's date, so I can remember where the infiormation came from. Once you have the file stored safely, there should be an option in your new tree program to import or load a file, probably FILE / IMPORT or something similar. It should then let you choose the type of file, for which you need to select .GED (the suffix for GEDCOM files). Hope this helps a bit. |

Hi Elaine, yes it does give me that option, I always find at first if I save on desk top, I know where to look, but when I am browsing I can't see it. I'm wondering if I have to save it at first a different way. I'll change the title of the thread, thanks for your help. |

Am back for a bit but will have to go again in a minute!! When you are in Legacy and click on File and then import - does it give you a folder where you should be looking for the file - does it give you an option to browse so that you can find the desktop files. Am sorry I don´t use Legacy so don´t know exactly what comes up - it might just be better starting a new thread with a title LEGACY HELP- HOW DO I IMPORT GR TREE? - or maybe change the heading of your existing thread and then people can see what you have done so far - am sure you will get some support and help from someone. This may seem a bit frustrating but persevere - believe me it will be a lot easier that typing all your ancestors into Legacy !!! |

I received the email, clicked on download and it comes out on one continuous piece. It didn't open up into my Legacy program. So I saved it on the desk top. I went to Legacy and file - import, but can't find the tree on desk top. Am I supposed to save it as any particular type or encoding? Thanks for any help. |

OK - on the left hand side of the screen you will see Import / Export tree click on this you then click on EXPORT GEDCOM A 'GEDCOM' file will be sent to your email box. Now, having never done this I don´t know how long it takes until you get it - but I believe I have read somewhere that it could take up to 15 minutes. Perhaps someone can confirm this for us. Once the gedcom file is on your computer you should be able to click on it and it will automatically open up in your Legacy program. If it doesn´t then you should have a facility to IMPORT a file into Legacy - probably under the FILE heading at the top of your page. Give it a go - it should be pretty easy - and come back to the board if you have a problem. PLEASE NOTE EVERYONE Am sorry but I have got to leave computer for a while - so if Shelley does come back with a query can someone else try to help. |

Hi Elaine, I'd like to say I'm a bit thick lol, but seriously though I have no idea how to import and export. I was just going to fill it all in then try and figure out what to do next. |

Elaine | Report | 17 Jul 2006 13:28 |
Shelley - why are you filling in the freebie ??? You can export your tree from GR - and then import the file into your freebie programe. Then do any alterations to correct any mistakes that you have. Once it is correct you then upload it back to GR. |

Hi Mary, I'm just filling one of the freebies in now, which is going to take ages! I hope it's easy enough to import it onto here. |

Shelley, I've had exactly the same problem 2/3 times with my tree - it's a glitch in the GR software. You'll either have to export to a family tree program such as PAF 5 (free from familysearch.org), edit and reimport, or contact GR support and ask them to fix it. |
