Doubtless we'll soon be getting a gleeful email from ancestry about the 'improvements' they've made to searching the 1901 census & the improved results. Not. OH STUFF - (said with feeling). Now GR are determined to reunite us with our ancestors ( Tee Rex and Please Your Saw Us.) - I just _knew_ things would go down the pan from the day we stopped being GC. Gone to be grumpy as I do 2 packups for himself tomorrow. :)) Jools

If they have to mess about with it, they might at least put the family in the same order as on the image (parents first, then children in descending order of age) instead of alphabetical order as before. C&P worked OK for me.

I don't understand what you are all on about!!!??? My Ancestry is just the same as it always was. GRU number at the bottom, RG blah blah all in the same place What's this mother spouse thing, haven't got that either. WHY me? I'm having probs viewing image on Scotland 1841 too. Can anyone help me on that!!! see my thread PLeeeeeease. Something odd is happening. Kat :)

MaryfromItaly Report 25 Jul 2006 00:21

It's only the 1901 census that's changed. Images have never been visible on the 1841 Scottish census as far as I know - only on the English censuses.

Should have put me glasses on, Mary, LOL. I thought I must be going balmy. Thanks for that Kat:)

What do you mean, Ozibird (search by family member)? Merry

Merry

Merry Report 25 Jul 2006 09:38

Oh I see......depending on how you access the search box you MAY get the option of ''Search By Family Member''. The way I usually access the census you don't get that, but if you click the census link on the bottom of the search page, you do! Merry

Angela now in Wilts (not North Devon) Report 25 Jul 2006 09:44

After moaning yesterday, I've been searching this morning & it can be useful for eliminating people without going through the images when searching. Still think it can be a bit misleading tho'. Angela

Hi All I have just had a look, haven't had a chance to fiddle with it yet but the Wales Census seems to have stayed the same. Probably too many 'Jones' Yvonne

Overall I'm sure it will be useful, but it would be nice if Ancestry put some sort of explanation or comment when they add something to their search facilities...... Merry

Margaret Report 25 Jul 2006 09:52

I agree with Angela I will be helpful to illimate people when you know the spouse ot parents name. Saves having to open all the images. I very rarely use the view record anyway, would rather see for myself. Margaret

Merry Report 25 Jul 2006 09:57

Ah yes Margaret, but in the (hypothetical!!!) situation of wanting to copy and paste the household, viewing the rest of the family is quicker than viewing the page first to see which surnames are involved, then going back and viewing everyone on the census sheet and picking out the ones who were in the relevant household. (Disclaimer: obviously, I would never copy and paste from Ancestry......this is a hypothetical posting only!) Merry

1871 transcription also includes the 'parent or spouse' column.................it's going to cause absolute havoc! Reg

Merry, Thanks for the heads up, have been sunbathing all day and just thought I would check out the boards, just looked at ancestry after reading your posting and think it could potentially save loads of time. Only problem is if they have transcribed a spouse or parents name incorrectly!! Fuzzy

Margaret

Margaret Report 25 Jul 2006 15:56

Ann The only time I read the view record option is if I can't make out the first name of the person and where they were born. Sometimes the transcribers opinion as to what it is helps. Then again, sometimes it's no help at all (LOL) Margaret

Unknown Report 25 Jul 2006 16:11

I hate it!!!!!! It's no help at all - only serving to confuse me more than I was already and I didn't think that was possible! Why fix what wasn't broke??? !!!! Bev x

*** Fuzzy Report 25 Jul 2006 16:25

I wonder if Ancestry are open to suggestions?!!!! I think it would be very helpful if you could search by name, year, area and occupation and ONLY get the ones that are relevant.......Just looked out of window and seen a huge flock of pigs flying past LOL Fuzzy

I do use view record as a quick way to get the complete census ref for that page to use as a source, but I always check the image before I copy it, just in case lol. Kat :)
