Also, how can George be FIL to both of them? 1861 Name: Fanny Hunt Age: 23 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1838 Relation: Daughter-in-law Gender: Female Where born: Mogdore East Cocet of Apeses Civil parish: Stepney Ecclesiastical parish: Trinity Town: London County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Street address: Occupation: Condition as to marriage: View image Registration district: Mile End Old Town Sub-registration district: Mile End Old Town Eastern ED, institution, or vessel: 16 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 137 Household Members: Name Age George Barrow 44 Fanny Hunt 23 Samuel Hunt 27 |

Second question first...........the Hunts are both unmarried, so probably step-children. 'In-law' was commonly used to denote step-children in those days. Reg |

I'm looking a the image - I think that it says East Coast of Angelsey. I think that Reg is right about these being George's stepchildren, the children of his late wife by an earlier marriage. Christina |

Hm, I see they got their best handwriter to do this page! It looks to me like Mogden East Coast of Apirsey But what it should be is beyond me. I'll take a look at other censuses. nell |

Anyone think the last word looks like Africa? |

I have had a look at a map of Angelsey, there are places called Moelfre and Marian-Glas. I think that pronunciation could account for what was written down by the enumerator. I wonder if any of the Welsh GR members might be able to interpret what the real name of the place could be? Christina |

Have had no luck finding George Barrow or Fanny Hunt in 1851. Can't see anything resembling Mogden/Mogdon/Mogdor in streetmap uk. |

I have had another squint at it and I see where you are coming from with Africa, although I can't make myself see it as that it isn't impossible. C (Oh, lord, I can't spell Anglesey anymore - twice!!) |

I found a marriage for Samuel Hunt and a Fanny Riley in Sep 1860. Then I've now found a Fanny Riley on the 1851 living in Stepney. That gives her place of birth as Mog then says 'British Subject', so I assume that is her. |

If it says ...East Coast of........... that suggests to me that it may be overseas and the information was given to clarify the perhaps unknown place name. Gwyn |

So, if it says British sub, it must be abroad somewhere. Going to take another look.Grr, why did they have to make those marks when they where checking the census returns (rhetorical question, lol)? Looking at world gazeteer I haven't found a Mogador on the east coast of anywhere, only Mogador in Morocco and Mogadouro in Portugal, neither of which are on an east coast. C |

Am working on it as follows: 1). Don't think George's name is Barrow - looks like 'ss' in the middle. 2). On 1861 image you mention - It does say the Fanny + Samuel are unmarried but at the side of Fanny's name - where the occupation should be - To me, it clearly says 'wife !! There is a marriage of a Samuel Hunt in Stepney, March 1860 to Fanny Mary Ann Riley in Stepney. 3). I believe Samuel is stepson (son-in-law) and Fanny is his wife (therefore daughter in law). I think this is Samuel on 1851 in Stepney - he is a plasterer! My geography isn't very good, but Mogador is in Morocco, which is the north coast of Africa, isn't it? Mogadishu is on the east coast.... |
