thankyou margaret i did order my cert fom GRO and added abit of extra info about my ggrandmothers name being spelt one of 2 ways and the area they got married and it was useful being able to add extra bits just to make sure you get the right cert, just cant wait to send for my next one now although havong a probelm actually finding my ggrandads birth on any records. Hi Angela, You may find that your g.granddad's birth was not registered as it wasn't compulsory until 1875. If it is the great granddad from the marriage certificate (Edward Lee) then I can't find one born in Hull, which is what he gives as birthplace on the census in 1881 and 1891. Do you have the census details? If not let me know and I'll send you the images. Kath. x

I've been looking about for the family on earlier census and wondered if you think this could be a possibility. I have found a Matthew Lee (g.granddad's dad's name) in Hull with a son called Edwin. He also has sons called Charles and Lewis (which from later census is the name g.granddad gave two of his sons). Just wondered if g.granddad's name got changed or mistranscribed between Edwin/Edward. If so this is a possibility for the birth:- Edwin Lee June qtr. 1856, Hull, 9d, 209 I know this date is a bit out going by the age on the marriage certificate, but it would be right for the young Edwin on the census, and people often lied about their ages when marrying (maybe he felt a bit too much older than his bride). All of this is just supposition, but worth looking at. Kath. x

Hi Kath I have the 1881 entry and 1901 but nothing else.In 1881 he was lodging with his sister in law and I'm pretty confident this was him because my mum always said he was a boiler maker. Do you think he didnt actually know where he was born particularly as he seemede to be illiterate, Mum was always told the Lees were romany and because her dad died when she was only 9 months old she's had great difficulty giving me much to go on,I feel as though I may never be able to find anything and not sure where to look next. thanks Angie

Hi Kath Mum and I had actually considered this especially as he was most probably illiterate and I am certain that they must have originated from Hull because most of our family do and it would be odd if he happened to be born elsewhere especially as most of the family were fishermen or worked on the trawlers. Could I be very cheeky and ask if you could send me a copy of the entry, dont worry if you can't I will sort it out later. Thanks for being so helpful Kath I do appreciate it Angie x

Thankyou Kath you are really very kind,just like everyone on this site, i feel as though I can get somewhere now!! I will send for Edwins birth certificate and see what I get from that, when I was looking on the census records which just lists the names edwin appears up to 1871 and then he disappears and then Edward appears from 1881 so maybe we are on to something-I hope so!! thanks again Angiex
