Hi Lisa J There are no listings for Vaus in the areas of Godalming, Guildford, Dorking and surrounding areas. The Universal Directory 1791 consists of 5 volumes including descriptions of villages, details of their facilities and includes a list of residents with their trades, which does include the farmers, haybinders and labourers etc. Although again it covers mostly towns rather than the small villages such as Albury and does not seem to include all towns. I haven't studied these volumes myself comprehensively - and I must do that. Alison |

OC and G Although Northchurch is right next to Berkhampsted there are no listings for Sills or Horwood there. However, under Hemel Hempstead which is about five miles away there is listed under Nobility and Gentry a Miss Horwood of Marlowes. Alison |

Chris in Sussex You're welcome. There are a few Norris bods in Berkhampsted and Northchurch where I've just been searching. I wonder if they are connected to your line. Not sure how popular the name Norris is. Alison |

Alas, my ancestors arrived too late in Herts for the references, and so far I have none from Devon/Surry. However, the 'Universal' sounded good, so I googled for more info, and via Amazon found myself at this site: www.rod-neep.*co.uk/books/about/index.htm (remove the *) - sounds very interesting, I'll have to bookmark for another time. Would the Universal Directory include any Walkers at Eaton Socon in Bedfordshire, or is the town too small? Thanks |

Thank you very much, Alison. I appreciate the time spent looking up the Vaus family and your description of the Directory. May I ask for another lookup, please, when you have time? In the Directory, would they have any Vaus' in Shipley, Sussex in 1791, please? All Vaus' mentioned will be 'mine'. Thank you in advance. |

OC and G Heath is in Beds. Brickenden is next to Hoddesdon but there are no Spencers listed under Hoddesdon. Brickenden is probably fairly remote, I know that Bayford is next door. Alison |
