Borders, how important? Any thoughts?

I also think there can be lots of confusion over what defines a border. County, Shire, Administrative and Ecclesiastical borders can all be different! This caused me huge problems for ages until I realised that large areas of Lancashire came under the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of Yorkshire! OC |

I have a marriage in Cheshire for a couple born and bred in Suffolk. Reason? Bride worked for a vicar who moved and took his staff with him. She was under contract but contract ended when she married. I think in this case there was more to it. Bride had been with vicar for about 12 years and for all the lives of his children. Thanks everyone for all your examples of people wanting to and having to move around! It seems that people took about as much notice of county and parish boundaries then as they would now. That's what I was trying to get a feel for, whether people felt obliged to marry/live in a certain place forever and ever and ever, whether they felt attached to a place, or whether it was a case of needs must, and they went wherever they needed to, had to, or were told to. Thanks all :-) |
