Frank One tip when not being able to find a birth registration is to then look at the mother's maiden name. Perhaps he was born out of wedlock and registered under the mother's name, taking the name of the father, or mother's husband, later on. Alison |

For what it is worth and given the army connection Portsmouth and Gosport/Alverstoke were thick with military at that time. It was quite usual to cross the harbour for weddings/baptisms (I suspect this was due to which variation of church you belonged.) Not that I am involved but my money goes on the Alverstoke birth. C |

Thanks Alison & Clive, Had already had the thought, he may have been born out of wedlock, because another snippet my mother decided to tell me late last night, that one of his sister in laws told her that she liked a good time when she was younger but did not eloborate. Still trying to try and find where the Jacktan name came from, could be he did not like James and made it up? Frank |
