Andrew Report 11 Mar 2022 00:07

Hi, my grandmother took on my uncle when he was born, but it was through adoption, my uncles mother just gave him to my grandmother. My grandmother kept his name even his mothers surname and growing up he always knew. When he passed away his sons ask if I could help and try and find his mother but that’s when it got hard. I know his mothers name where she worked at the time but I can’t find anything about her at all. Any ideas on where to look or how to find any detail would be great, thank you

If his name wasn’t changed then his birth certificate will give his mums name

Try Freebmd

If you want any help then his name and date of birth plus his grandparents names will help

Andrew knows the mother's name according to his post. Look to see if you can find a marriage for her name in the area where she worked. You could also look at electoral registers to see if you can find her. Did she have any contact with him after handing him to your grandmother?

You know his mums name but what I was suggesting is locating her with her family to see if she had any siblings

Plus presume grandparents have passed so locating their deaths may help with who the informants were etc

You may have to go around in circles to narrow down the search

However, this is no help with Andrew's question.
Andrew hasn't replied on his thread. I wonder if he has tried any of the things suggested.

Was pmd with the info from Paula and sent loads of replies

1938 reg

His marriage and two girls born and their marriages

The birth and death of the first wife

All to recent to post on here

So lots of info sent !

He was living with Robert Storey and wife Caroline in 1939 and is an open record

However both Robert and Caroline were born 1907 so can’t have been grandparents of Louisa Prouse

Only one Louise Prouse in N E England in 1921. Born c1908

The ‘grandparents’ are the poster’s. And presumably NOT the ones I took the trouble to find, as the poster isn’t the person whose name is on the account

The Storey family is irrelevant to the actual enquiry

Thank you for all help, I will look into what has been added. It’s been the hardest part of the family tree as I’ve managed with everything apart from this ( my uncle Robert). With all the family no longer being with us I’ve had nobody to ask and only having a few details. Even finding details of his first wife and daughters was hard with not having details and not remembering them.

Andrew

Andrew Report 12 Apr 2022 00:06

Thank you all so much, I have emailed some of the details to my uncle Robert Prouse to his oldest son of his 2nd marriage and he’s going to talk to his brother about it but as ask my to say thank you from them. They live in Canada so finding anything is hard as they didn’t know anything.

All the info the helpers have found is on the following sites, which your uncle's sons can access for themselves if they wish to verify what has been found and possibly investigate further back in their family tree.

https://www.freebmd.org.uk/search - free to use, as the name implies. (English/Welsh records only)

https://www.ancestry.co.uk - a subscription site (coverage depends on level of sub).
and/or
https://www.findmypast.co.uk - ditto

https://www.gro.gov.uk - free to use, though you have to register. (English/Welsh records)

For someone with no previous experience of family tree research, it seems daunting, and hard to know where to begin.
All the helpers were in that position once - but look at us now!
