Eliz Anderson maiden surname Scott died 31/7/1875
Her death was rego'ed by her son with the wrong forename.
Maybe rego'ing her death brought on a brain-freeze.
However, this was corrected on the gravestone MI
As an aside, women, at least at that time and place (the Buchan area in N Aberdeenshire). were buried under their maiden surnames.
I didn't know abt Alex - he was 16 in 1841, but isn't with the family on the Rathen census.
I later found a "15" y.o. Alex with, probably, his 14 y.o. bro working as Ag Labs on a Crimond farm 5km away.

in this parish declared their purpose of marriage and
were married.

Six of Eliz's descendents had been searching for her d.cert for quite a while.
None of us guessed she'ld be rego'ed under the wrong name.
AFHS used to have an on-line data base that was sort of like an index to theit MI booklets, with names grouped by gravestone.
I stumbled across Anderson & Scott on the same Turriff MI, so I asked the others if they had the Turriff MI booklet.
One of the others got Eliz & Alex Smr's d.cert, and took a pic of the gravestone, which I've transcribed above.

Anne Hamilton is listed as Mary Hamilton's daughter on the 1851 census. On the 1871 census daughter Anne is not listed but Ann aged 5 is listed as granddaughter.
When John William is on the 1881 census he is just listed as 'Boarder' and not Grandson. The address on the 1881 census is the same address as is shown on John William's marriage certificate, so he lived with them for a while. He was married in 1889.

I researched his name and found out he was a farmer's son. There was a male and female witness who eventually married each other.

I will check and see if I can find a baptism record.

Thanks

You say that the witness to the 1889 marriage was a farmer's son. I have never known the occupation of the witnesses to be recorded on a marriage cert

You are unlikely ever to know who his father was. The only hope would be if he was named on the baptism record, if there is one

Thank you all. This information is making me think that maybe one of Mary's brothers was John William's father. John married Sarah Alice Dixon and on their marriage certificate there is a father named as Thomas Hamilton who was a farm labourer. The male witness on the certificate was a farmers son. So maybe John's father worked at their farm? I have lots of research to do.

Thanks Again

Thanks Erika H. Thanks for that information. So Mary wasn't married previously and Hamilton was her maiden name. Maybe Peter was her brother?
I can pick up lots of research from this information. Thank you so much. I presume the 'X' mean they could not write. On John Ambleton/Hamiltons birth certificate his mother Ann's name is represented by an X. I presume this was commonplace at the time.

On 1851 Census Mary and her daughter listed as living in Blackgate Lane,Ormskirk and May age 39 is listed as a widow. On 1871 census Thomas Mary and their Daughter Margaret (b 1852?) are listed as living in Barrow. Mary and Thomas were married in Ormskirk in 1853.

So was Mary actually a widow when she married Thomas or was that for respectability? Or Thomas possibly the Father but not named at the time.

Thanks everyone. I did think that Ann Hamilton (Grandaughter) on 1871 census is John William's sister was a possibility which is why I think that Mary Lee (Hamilton) is the key. I don't know what her maiden name was and who she was married to before Thomas or if she stayed in Tarleton/Ormskirk from birth to marrying Thomas.

Thanks I will check out the birth information given.

Mary also had a daughter called Ann who was born in 1839/1842, who could possibly be John William's mother, but I cannot find a record of her being in Barrow in Furness where John William was born.

You are correct regarding Thomas' age. He was around 20 years younger than Mary.
