I am just wondering whether GRO still does a free search for a birth when giving a mothers name etc but not including the vol/page references, please.

Many thanks. :-)

Not sure what you mean..................

You can do a free search yourself on the GRO website

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

Look at the site for info about its services

You can search also on freebmd, but the MMN is only on that site after 1911

They will search for a record when you’re unable to give a reference number, but charge an additional £3.

As Erica has pointed out, the GRO site does show mother’s maiden name for births from 1837 to 100 years ago. Births weren’t required to be registered until the mid 1870s.

Thank you. I did many of those searches which used to be free of charge. It's still good value when even though already aware of the GRO refs it helps in ascertaining whether a certificate belongs to the birth parent of an adopted child and there are many possibilities. :-)

They used to take full payment for the certificate but return the fee if the birthmother was not the correct one for the search one was doing.
