Many thanks Shirley, very much appreciated. I was looking for an ancestor who was running a dress making business at the address in 1902. Unfortunately, she doesn't appear to be on the 1901 census.anywhere. She was born in 1871 as Edith Lucy TULIT. I've got her on the 1871 & 1881 census. She next appears in 1902 advertising herself as Lucie VERNON (Miss) Dressmaker. 3 years later she is advertising herself as Lucie Vernon (Madame) Court dressmaker living round the corner at 21 Upper Montague Street. In 1907 she is on the voters register as Mrs Lucie JOHNSTON. On the 1911 census she calls herself Lucie E. Vernon Johnston (widow). I can find no evidence of marriage to change her name once let alone twice. On Ancestry I have attached 26 documents to her but nothing concerned with a marriage. I am beginning to think the name changes were for business purposes and calling herself a widow gave her respectability. On her probate record in 1961 she is shown as a spinster. On her mothers probate record in 1908 she is a widow. Very confusing. Once again, thanks for the look-up.

It doesn't look like Vernon on the actual form
Record Transcription: 1911 Census For England & Wales 21 Upper Montague ST, St Marylebone, London & Middlesex, England
Household Members Members that resided in the household at the time of the census.
First name(s) Last name Relationship Marital status Sex Age Birth year Occupation Birth place William Hay Boarder Married Female 52 1859 Private Means Lanark Glasgow Beatrice MacHan Boarder Married Female 31 1880 Private Means Hastings Henry Hubard Harper Boarder Single Male 36 1875 Solicitor Leamington Warwickshire Louise Lowey Housekeeper Single Female 41 1870 Housekeeper Domestic London Lucie E Felmon Johnston Head Widow Female 39 1872 Dressmaking Surrey
Says married 12 years no children
So she is head of house so must have been letting out rooms
Maybe she got more respect as a widow rather than a spinster
Wonder why her mum named her a Johnston in her will

If you have a look at the front page of the 1911 census it clearly says 'Vernon'. But, the way she wrote it and signed it looks quite different.
She says 'None' to chidlren on the same census and '12' years of marriage. Does that mean she had 12 years of marriage before her husband died or that she was married 12 years ago (1899).
Between 1935 & 1937 she moved from 21 to 31 Upper Montague Street. On her mothers death certificate in 1908, she was Lucie E. Johnston.
Her father died in 1870 in South Africa and her only other sibling died in Kingston, Surrey in 1874 aged 4.
Her mother was a domestic servant on the 1901 census so I am now wondering how or where she got the money to set herself up in business. On the 1911 census she is shown as an Employer.
It will probably remain a mystery.

She consistently calls herself mrs
Name: Mrs Lucie Edith Johnstone Year: 1933 County or Borough: Westminster Ward or Division/Constituency: St Marylebone Street address: 21 Upper Montagu
Think it's all for respectibily. Ladies didn't have as much respect then as gents so calling herself a widow took her up a notch
The 1911 I posted is from FMP and is the transcript
She is an emloyer but she has a housekeeper living with her so maybe that's the staff
She may have been working from home rather than an establishment

She died just before her 90th birthday, good on her.
The house she lived in all those years is now valued at about £5 million. Not bad for a dressmaker.

ArgyllGran,
I've just noticed that on her probate record it gives 3 variations of the spelling of her name - Lucy, Lucie & LUCIA. I assume it was because at some point in her life she used it.
Teamwork - you can't beat it.
