I am looking for Annie Cook b. 1879 and Alice Cook b1881.
They were on board the Riverina that left London for Melbourne via Adelaide. Arriving Melbourne 01/10/1888.
I have been unable to find the passenger list for the Riverina.
I am hoping that they are the children of Arthur Cook. I only have family stories to go by. :-)

I would say you are right Shirley not the right family. " THANKS " everyone for you quick response. I know nothing about Arthur Cook except on his family in Tasmania. When or where he came from I have no idea. Family stories has he was suppose to be a ships Captain. Here in Tassie he was a hawker when his first son was born with Sarah Hull. The other three boys he was a fishmonger. He was supposed to have gone back home to England and found his wife in bed with his brother - gathered the two girls up and came back to Australia leaving them in Melbourne with rellies. That's all I know

ArgyllGran Report 22 Jul 2016 22:12

There are police reports about various Arthur Cooks - but not knowing when he was born or died it's impossible to know if any of them could be him.

For example:

An inquest was held at the General Hospital, Hobart, on 18th inst. [ January 1889], before F W Mitchell, Esquire, Coroner, on the body of Arthur Cook, aged 52 years.
Verdict: died from collapse, consequent on purging and vomiting of a choleric nature, on 17th instant.

A son of Arthur and Sarah ?? He was born the same day the Arthur above died - but probably not connected.
Perhaps he's the child who was neglected??

Ancestry suggests this is the same child in 1911 (not grown up) - but I have no idea if it is the same Arthur or not - no middle name on birth record:

" THANK YOU ALL " :-) for your replies. Have never been able to find a marriage for Sarah and Arthur and I have assumed that is because he was married in England ( family story ) YES that is Arthur that died in 1899 and Yes that is the youngest child ( Arthur ) that was born the day after he died. Arthur Edward ( youngest child ) is the one that was in the English census. He put on his enlistment papers he was an orphan. Sarah herself was an alcoholic so had various police reports on her behaviour including neglect of the children and a fire. The Arthur born in Tasmania does interest me thou as family has said he was born in England. Maybe not worth looking at.

No have not found anything at all. But what I did find out yesterday. Sarah DID marry twice after Arthur ( 1 ) William Davey ( 2 ) John Dillworth
On her marriage certificate to Davey she said she had three children - two living one deceased.
The interesting thing that I never knew before I saw the paperwork was that she married Davey in 1887 her youngest was born 1889 the day after Arthur had died. To make it more confusing Davey died from a tragic accident 17 /07/1889 before the child was born. So from that I have assumed that the last born was a Davey not a Cook. I am not sure if Tasmania has census or assessment rolls back in those times. Will need to go see if I can find where she was living at the time of Arthurs death 20/01/1889 and the baby being born 21/01/1899 Sarah would have been about 3 months along when Davey died and she was with him when the accident occurred. On his enlistment papers he put down he was an orphan. I know Sarah put all 5 into the Queens Orphanage - makes me wonder know if she took the youngest back. Did say on the orphanage's paperwork that she did but did she keep him.

Tasmanian LINC index has the children of Arthur COOK and Sarah HULL (not HILL) as:

68098 COOK EDWARD ARTHUR 1883
68100 CROOK ARTHUR 1885
68097 COOK HECTOR WILLIAM 1887
68099 COOK ARTHUR 1889

There are birth certificates for all the children at LINC.

Edward Arthur COOK b. 25 Sept 1883 to Arthur COOK, hawker, and Sarah COOK formerly HULL, of Kemp St, Hobart, registered 7 Nov 1883.

Arthur COOK b. 20 Dec 1885 to Arthur COOK, commission agent, and Sarah COOK, formerly HULL, of Lower Argyle St, Hobart, registered 29 Jan 1886.

Hector William COOK b. 23 Oct 1887 to Arthur COOK, fish agent, and Sarah COOK, formerly HULL, of Argyle St, Hobart, registered 23 Nov 1887.

Arthur COOK b. 18 Jan 1889 to Arthur COOK, fish agent, and Sarah COOK, formerly HULL, of No. 97 Argyle St, Hobart, registered 20 Feb 1889.

Sarah remarried 24 Nov 1897 to Wm DAVEY, she was 36 and he was 34, of Glen Fern, housekeeper and widow, daughter of Edward HULL, baker, and Ellen HULL nee ALLEN.

Sarah's parents Edward HULL and Ellen ALLEN married in Tasmania in 1854 :

Edward was a convict who arrived aboard Rodney (1) in 1850 from Portland, transported for burglary.

It seems odd that Arthur & Sarah would have married and had their eldest 2 daughters in England when Sarah was from Tasmania?
