According to the Probate Record and the Honor Roll of Service, John Jr was a Captain, and those records were not kept with the records of the ordinary servicemen. Most of those records have apparently survived :-)


It might be a matter of finding which name he used after the war!

60 percent of the army records were destroyed in the bombing in Sept 1940. Harry Waghorn was RAF so his survived. Now I HAVE to find out about John jnr - think I've found a marriage for 1915 to Lucie S Mills.

I can't find much about his service as many/most/all of the records of the MGC have "disappeared"

I wonder if John Jr changed his name because of the antipathy against Germans in WW1?

omg - His sister Kate married Harry Waghorn who also went to Mesopotamia.

Harry enlisted as a Private, was commissioned and went to Mesopotamia and then to Egypt and into the Royal Flying Corps (RAF from 1st April 1918). Harry's two eldest sons were fighter pilots in the RAF in WW2, both lost in 1941.

so it looks as though he was in Mesopotamia (ie much of modern-day Iraq) from March 1916 to June 1918.

Ok, sorry if you think I've missed stuff you've posted but there's sooo much.

Anyway I do have the marriage cert for John and Charlotte, also for Charlotte's parents. Not sure where I got the Dublin connection from, have to dig through the mass of notes I've made over the years :-S

I just re-checked that 1911 Census, and yes, Johann did state "naturalised 20 years", and written 1891 on that same line

but he'd obviously got the time span wrong!

Wow, looks like you've nailed it. I got the naturalisation date froma husehold census form found through GR.

On your last post re marriage of Harry and Kate the copy of the certificate I have shows the names as T L T Sykes and A M Boothman (Bookman?)

I also think that it is possible that Charlotte Agnes was raised in London, and may not have been born in Sussex.

There IS an Agnes Dickson working in St Leonards on Sea as a servant in 1881, juse before Joh*n might have met her.

But this baptism seems to fit the dates for Charlotte

and Ian appears to have ignored them ..................... so I decided to re-post close to the Naturalisation certificate, with the added information


The fact remains that there is no other Joh*n Scholer appearing on the censuses in the UK, and all the names on these censuses fit names that Ian has, together with what appears to be wrong information, such as date of naturalisation and place of birth of Charlotte Agnes.

IF Ian had looked at these censuses, he would have seen that Charlotte Agnes never states her place of birth as being anywhere other than in or near Hasitngs.

That would tell you who Joh*n said was his father's name
