that house was a lodging house but not just for theatricals, there were people with all kinds of occupations living there, from labourers to French Polishers, hawkers, coal miners, a widow being supported by her children etc
There are about 40 people listed as living in that house, including the owner and his family

Thank you so much. My grandfather never mentioned his life in Yorkshire or his family I think I now know why. but it has raised more questions. What was the signicance of Kaufman I haven't a clue. And how did rose end up in a workhouse in nottingham. The house in bishop Auckland was a lodging house I always assumed that this was a theatrical lodging house. But it may not have been

She might be more open minded than you expect.
When we told a relative (older than your mum) that her parents married 5 months before her birth, at first she went red. Then it dawned on her why she was never shown their wedding photos and why she and her now husband were so heavily chaperoned!

Perhaps you could be a bit economical with the truth.
Reading what was on the school roll, it sounded like they thought he was basically an intelligent lad who had been led astray by the people he associated with and a poor home life with mother struggling to bring up children on her own. Perhaps the school trained him as an instructor to give him some structure in his life.

Thank you so much. We knew about the Exeter bit as that is he worked when my mother was born in the thirties it's interesting to work how he became an instructor at a similar institution to what he was an inmate in. Now comes the big question to I tell my very frail mum who is in her eighties this.
