I don't like it but I think I've gone as far as I can go with Margaret and Bridget.
Unless, Margaret had relatives in Ireland (which most of Liverpool have) and for some reason she was there the night the census was done.
I heard it's not possible to access Irish records due to a fire or something. Is that correct?
If so I might start looking at my Dads lineage in Scotland. I think his grandfather was valet in a big house in the Calton hill area. Do I have to join Scotland's People for that? My Dad was born in Glasgow, his mother was from there.
ps I know it's not nice but we call Margaret Driscoll Nanny X (with affection) because she could only make her mark with an X. Isn't it amazing how a family can change in 3 generations. Nanny X had at least 9 grandchildren and about 30 great grandchildren, all happy and doing well

there are 2 possibilties as to why we can't find Margaret and Bridget on the 1901

1. There has been an error in how the surname was written ............... it is not unknown for the enumerator tow miss out a surname and "add" someone to either the house next door, or to others in the house if they are boarding.

One has to look for people using only their forenames, birth year and birth place, and hope that something strikes a bell.


2. It is not unknown for someone to be missed off the census ........... reasons unknown

if that is Thomas father of Margaret, the Tucker girls were slightly older than stated

and in 1871 they were with widowed mother Elizabeth, charwoman, boarding in a McNamara household in Liverpool. But Elizabeth and Thomas don't seem to have married.

I might wonder whether Margaret was really born in Ireland ... if Thomas was born in Cork ...

Irish census were destroyed, other than some fragments the 1901 and 1911. But Church records exist.

I have been certainly trying only given names, only car* for surname, and every other permutation that has found me my own ancestors and others, but no luck in 1901 indeed ... so far ...

Joonie, I've tried the same, first name, surname , variations of Carney , and even for Bridget, 'infant', 'baby', and just the birth year + -2 and can't find anything either :-(

Did anyone get any further with this?

I also had tried only Bri*et, Marg*, etc etc

and got nowhere

I tried at CWGC site but there is no Carney who died on 11 Nov 1918

I wondered whether it was Bridget's uncle John Edward O'Malley who was meant, as Chris posted:

KILLED IN ACTION 22ND SEP. 1914,
AGED 38 YEARS.

for someone to have been in the military and die in 1918 he would in all likelihood have been born before 1900 that is before Bridget

there are unfortunately numerous J and John Carneys in the CWGC lists for whom no age or next of kin info is given

I was wondering if, as the marriage was in 1895 there might have been another child or children before Bridget?

13/5/1916 James Carney was at 32, Chaucer Street Bootle same place as Bridget and Thomas in 1911.

Just been looking closer at sailing records for James Carney age 25 = 1877 of which there are 3 on them on all he gives his address as 24,Nursery Street.

19/12/1902 Saxonia.

They weren't at number 24 Nursery Street on 1901 census but may have been in that area.

Thanks Mary, how do you get access to all those records like the one stating he was in Chaucer Street in 1916?
I joined as platinum thinking I could access all the records but have only been able to look at electoral registers from 2002 and where are the sailing records? will I have to add those on to my membership?

Donna many of us use other sites as well as this one, some of the records come from Ancestry which has some Liverpool records not available here, some from free sites like www.lan-opc.org.uk/ , some things are found just by googling a combination of names. :-)

A tree on ancestry has the address where James was in 1916,records of his sailings are also on ancestry.co.uk
