I am at a point where I really want to give up..!! I am stuck with my great x2 grandfather john Clouston, born in 1850/51 in Wapping, London.. I have found only one census when he was in Kirkdale at the time my great grandfather was born in 18888..
I have been stuck with looking for john for 2 years now and I just can not get any where.. is there anyone who can help me get pass this brick wall once and all.. I really do want to know where my family come from and who they were, so I can find me..! :-(

Do you know who he married? There are only 2 marriages on FreeBMD between 1870 and 1885 - one in Poplar and one in Middlesbrough.

If you send for the marriage certificate it will give you his father's name and occupation, which is another generation further back.

Are you referring to the 1891 census where John is a visitor staying with Peter and Rhevena (?) Davis in Kirkdale?

He is marked as being single.so what year did he marry and have your great-grandfather?
I'm not sure that Rhebena is a name but she was born in Westminster so it could be that she is John's sister?

The 1891 census posted by BeverleyW earlier (in Kirkdale Lancashire) shows John Clouston as a Customs Officer, so maybe he followed his father into that occupation, as per baptism records.

There are a number of Catherine Clouston's in Orkney and a couple of John's born
c1847/8 too. Fortunately each family seem to keep to certain places on Orkney.

Both Spence and Johnson - the children's middle names are common as surnames on Orkney and following Scottish naming patterns are likely to be surnames of their grandparents or earlier.

What does it give for occ. of Father John, on Birth Certs?...

If the son Harry was born in 1888, then the John living in Kirkdale aged 40 can't be the right one since he was single in 1891.

Have sent Georgina a PM to help her return to her thread and hopefully give us further information.

John Coulston married Liverpool A/M/J 1892 to Jane Weir 8b 371 she was born Mary Jane Weir in Ireland to Neil Weir and Elizabeth.So the John in 1891 kirkdale is correct.

The only information I have is from the census.. I can not find a Bor D for john Clouston..
my 2xgreat grandmother is Mary Jane weir, born in Ireland then moved to Kirkdale with her family.. Mother is Eliza (Elizabeth) after 1888 she moved again to reddish in Stockport, where the rest of the family came from...
I myself is wondering if it is john spencer Clouston, but how can I be sure with out the doc's I need?
I have harry & Emily's marriage cert which gives john Clouston as the father.. but only Emily's parents have signed it,
I do know that the family name comes from the Orkney's.. just so many of us..lol
