If you are doing research towards a degree, you should formulate your own questions, not copy parrot-fashion something posted by someone else.
And do some research yourself into the sites...................any opinions expressed on here by other members would be purely subjective.

Have you looked at the site yourself?
If you had, you'd realise that your questions are, I'm sorry to say, a bit pointless.

The value you get from GENUKI depends on which county your ancestors came from. The site is run by volunteers and some are far better than others. Many of the counties simply refer you to local history archives or other off-line records, but some are excellent.
I am fortunate in that one line of my ancestors came from a small village in Derbyshire, and one of the links is to a list of transcriptions of Derbyshire Wills. This has been put together by a few enthusiastic volunteers and for me was a goldmine!!
The only way to find out if the site is any good for you is to try it out.

By Genuki do you mean http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/ ? (This is one of the sites in my family history folder in bookmarks on my computer.) The site is maintained by Brian Randell and http://www.genuki.org.uk/org/#About gives information about it.

well, here's a tip Candidiasia that may help
do a search at FreeBMD for whatever you like
in the search results, there will be a clickable registration district name
click on it and another window will open
it will say that details about the registration district are available 'here'
I use those links all the time to find out what little hamlets and crossroads are covered by a registration district name
the 'here' takes you to GENUKI's description of the district
here's an example:
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/strand.html
and within that page there are links you can use to navigate to other info at GENUKI
its main contents page is
http://www.genuki.org.uk/contents/
but - and here is my answer to your question! - I confess I seldom (read: never) use it myself, largely because I don't find it especially (read: at all) user-friendly and I have never really figured out what I can expect to find there, except for those links from freebmd

I do apologise most sincerely to Candidiasia .........
...... it seems that I did indeed mis-interpret what she is saying as being a sign that she was mis-leading us as to the purpose of her questions, especially the ones on the June 2 post .......
but there still remains the fact that there is one other person asking exactly the same questions on other sites, and that person has admitted to doing it under instructions from work
May I suggest that you contact your Advisor, and present them with the problem that has been identified ........
....... that there are two people asking identical questions with one doing it for purposes that were not truthful, and that indeed was doing for what could be considered as "remuneration". That person used the site names Divergent and Ribbonscream.
I do not know if one participant in the long distance course is supposed to do research that is also being undertaken by another participant, or whether course research topics are supposed to be individual.
Your Course Advisor should also be made aware that many of the people who help on these sites for free and out of goodwill prefer to be told the truth, and she / he should so advise any future students intending to do similar studies.
There is also the problem that the questions asked in those posts of June 2 and 3 were not exactly well thought out ................ certainly not produced by anyone who really knew about genealogical research.
edited ca 10:00 pm to correct spelling of Ribbonscream

Yes the questions were suggested after I spoke to my Course Advisor, I was asked to research and get a general feeling for what people thought of these two.
After having looking at Hull History Centre On-line I felt it was not sufficient to compare and contrast Ancestry with that.
I had never heard of GENUKI till I spoke to a cousin overseas who suggested it. Hence why I asked about it.

The thing is, Candidiasia, the post I linked to:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=722913.0
(posted at rootschat by someone named Candidiasia, either the biggest coincidence in the world or you)
actually reads like an academic assignment:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi, I am a distance learner with Aberystwyth University. I am currently doing the module Information Retrieval The assignment is 'compare and contrast information retrieval systems' The group I have chose for this is Genealogy researchers. I have to select two different Information Retrieval Systems suitable for the user group. Make sure: the systems are different enough so that you have material to discuss and compare You may draw from the following broad categories: Internet search engine (do not select Google) Metasearch engine Internet directory Subject gateway or portal Library OPAC (e.g Voygaer) A specific on-line database A social tagging based IR system I have chose Ancestry as the specific online database but am wondering what I else I can use. Does anyone have any thoughts on this. Many thanks Candis
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(the terms of reference themselves are pretty much incomprehensible to anyone not involved in that field of study, 'Information Retrieval', myself included)
but then, separately, we have the posts that Sylvia has reproduced several times, that were placed at several different sites, under several different usernames, including *yours* here at genesreunited, and all contain exactly the same words, and are signed exactly the same: RS
two of those usernames, Divergent and Ribbonstream, have admitted to being the same person, and to be posting on behalf of a prospective genealogical services company
you post **the exact same thing** here - right down to the 'RS' signature (that you have deleted) and spelling errors - not 'similar', *identical* - and claim to know nothing about the others
and really, the idea that two other people in your course would pick the exact same topic of study and ask the exact same misspelt questions ...
this is just silly
why do you not just tell us what is going on, and let people decide for themselves whether to answer your questions once they know what you are going to do with the answers?

Re the Hull History Centre
I would add that Ribbonstream's response to being asked "why Hull History Centre" was that "a colleague at work" had used them as a local resource and suggested they be added to the list.

so we leave it as an unanswered question as to how there are 4 posts on 4 different sites under 3 different names all asking the absolutely identical questions, with the same identical mistakes.
May I ask ........... how did you come up with the list of questions you asked in the June 2nd posting?

What are there shortcomings of Parish Records?
How could such issues be resolved? -----
Were the questions suggested by your Course Advisor?

Once again I sate I am a female and work for an educational establishment and my degree is a distance learner.
I do not know who divergent or ribbonscream are as a distance learner I do not have that much contact with anyone else doing the course. Nor am I aware that people would chose the same similar thing to do for an assignment.
My interest in genealogy is as a hobby and I have been doing my family tree since I lost my Dad in 2005.

Candidiasia has indeed been a long time member of GR and of Rootschat.
BUT I still think my question is relevant.
Why is the OP on her thread of June 2 2015 IDENTICAL to postings made by Ribbonstream and Divergent on FTF, Rootschat, and WDYTYA Forum
and I do mean identical .......... down to the same mis-spellings.
Ribbonstream and Divergent have turned out to be the same person, signing their posts with RS ............... and Candidiasia's OP on that other thread was initially signed with RS until the post was edited some time between 3:55 am and 6:30 am this morning (June 14)
Does this mean that the R and D are also doing the same distance learning course as Candidiasia's, and they were given the same list of questions to be asked?
Possible
I am also very curious about the answer to the question he gave
But then why did he admit on all 3 of those other sites AFTER being told that there was a difference between asking "us" for help for an academic project and for paid work ............
------ The company is looking at venturing into genealogy. I was asked to ask on various genealogy forums what the opinions, thoughts and feelings of the public ie you on the questions that have been asked hence the reason it is posted on other forums to do with genealogy. Hull History Centre was the only one mentioned as a colleague has some experience of using this.

I didn't actually state that you asked about Hull in Your OP.
Maybe you should read all the posts on this thread - I have!
And who is Mike? Where has his quote come from? Edit: I've just found the Mike quote on rootschat. Maybe you should have told us that when you cut and pasted in Genes!

what is your connection with Divergent who asked questions on here on June 2 and with Ribbonscream who asked the same question on FTF on June 3 ......... you asked the same question as Divergent and Ribbonscream on GR on June 2
Not the same person at all. Candidiasia has a proven track record of proper family research on this forum, and was very upfront about the reason for her question.

What is so special about the Hull archives?
Here is another site (wdytya- forum) with a question from Ribbonstream - similar to Sylvia's posting of 15 June 06.30.
Comments on that one are interesting - worth reading.
Edit. I seem to have forgotten to add the link: http://www.whodoyouthinkyouaremagazine.com/forum/topic11959.html

Hi
No they are not identical I am a female who works for an educational company. my only interest in genealogy is as a hobby.
I am not bothered if people comment or do not comment it is entirely up to them. As I have never used Genuki and it was suggested by an older relative.
I thought I would just ask what people thought of it to get an idea. I have had a look through it. Yes I think it could be a useful site for my assignment that I am doing.

I do note that you have now edited the OP on your other thread in order to remove the initials RS .......... however, several other people had already seen and noted the presence of them.
others might like to compare that OP with the one from FTF by Ribbonstream and the one from Rootschat by Divergent

Opinions Please
Hi
I am interested to know what peoples thoughts and opinions are on the below.
What do sites like this and Ancestry, FMP etc. versus Hull History Centre online and others have in common?
What are there differences?
What are there shortcomings?
What can't they find out that you would like to?
What are there shortcomings of Parish Records?
How could such issues be resolved?
Many thanks

I think they are identical!
The thing is ................ we don't mind helping people trying to collect information to help with academic projects, but it is a very different matter when someone is collecting information with an intent to make financial benefit out of it!
