I think they married in 1876 and normally get married just before a birth. Think thats where the confusion comes from?

Although it is curious that they were married in 1876 but no children until 1886. Of course there could have been previous children who had died.

Thank you Shirley I didn't have that information

I looked it up but thank you.
illnesses or deficiencies of the mind.

It seems strange only having 1 child back in them days. James seems to have been an only child as far as I can find.
I would appreciate conformation if any one can help

or could mean a bit backward or had learning difficulties

sometimes kiddys had illnesses that affected their future development.OR were born with problems that made them vulnerable.

All sorts of birth problems like Downs etc , Its nothing new to have developement problems

Lesley, the feeble minded comment was on the last column of the 1911 census where disabilities are listed. Not sure what they meant by it back then, possibly dementia of some sort?

In 1901 he is living with his mother in the household of her sister Susan Brierley although it doesn't show it on the transcription. Another sister last name Matthews is living with them (I can't make out initials of first name). All 3 sisters are widows. Also sister E. A. Southwell, single.
