Jean Report 24 Jun 2014 13:50

I have been looking for Henry again since finding Alexander but still nothing for him as yet , but I am keeping my fingers crossed he pops up out of the blue like his brother .

You are probably right about his mother relying on his wages as she did apply for poor relief a couple of times if you remember.

I wonder if Alexander had left a will ?
I have been looking at the National archives website but can't really make much sense of it , perhaps someone could help me out and point me in the right direction,
many thanks

Very sad that he died so young. His poor mother probably didn't find out for weeks and was probably counting on his pay to help provide for the family. I wonder if his brother Henry enlisted too.

Hello rootgatherer,

yes, this is the one my friend found yesterday at Kew.
Such a shame he died so young.
I wonder how his mother Margaret would have found out about his death.

Update on Alexander.

greyghost was right about DD meaning discharged on death.

A friend of mine visited the archives at Kew and found the ships log books.
It states that on 4/1/1906 landed funeral party to intern the remains of Pte Alexander Moore RMLI .

Such a shame as he would only have been about 26 years old.
It was on the "Hyacinth " whilst in Calcutta.

There was nothing to say how he died .
I will have to try and find out if a death certificate would have been issued .

Thanks again to everyone for their input

Sorry for the late replies, babysitting duties on Friday so just got home .

alviegal,

There is one Moore brother still unaccountable .Henry Stewart Moore d.o.b. c1860
he is shown last on the 1881 census age 21, occupation is hammerman, no sign of him anywhere after this date it seems .

greyghost,

Thank you for your input .very interesting.
I just hope DD in Alexander's case does not mean discharged death .

rootgatherer,

hello,I hope you are well.

Can't believe Alexander has been found after all this time .
It just shows you should never give up.

Nearly all accounted for now apart from Henry Stewart Moore. Alexander's older brother , but I am on a mission now to try and find him as well.

I hope your research is going well,

regards
jean

Hello Jean. I am so pleased that you have found Alexander after all this time. You must be so excited. Is that all you Moores accounted for now?

Hope you are well.

Looking at those service records and comparing with Hyacinth's history, I would say that Alexander embarked as she sailed in 1903 to relieve her sister ship HMS Highflyer as flagship of the East Indies Station. His character and ability are then reported annually ie to 31st December each year, last being Dec 1905, when I think that his character and ability are recorded as VG - ie Very Good. There is then an entry 1 Jan 06 - 3 Jan '06 by which is the notation DD. A very short time in which to be Dishonourably Discharged, although not impossible.

Hyacinth's records show that she was in reserve in Devonport in 1906 but not precisely when in 1906.
EDIT - but as Highflyer was back in the East Indies as flagship in November 1906, then possibly not until late 1906 was Hyacinth back in Devonport. A new Captain was appointed January 1907, so that might fit.

So as an outside chance -
Unfortunately in Service Parlence DD could well mean Discharged Dead. And no precise idea of where, so maybe no record available??

You're very welcome Jean. I know the feeling when you finally break down a brick wall....trouble is, I'm sure there are a few more to break down!

Let us know if we can help any more.

alviegal,

Thank you so much for your help, this is my grandad's older brother .

I can't believe I have finally found him after 5 years of searching, or I should say you have found him .

I have been shouting at the laptop while the rest of the family are shouting at the football , suffice to say I am more excited than my kids .

All I have to do now is carry on the search and see if he went on to marry and have a family.

You can see his service record on fmp, his last discharge was in 1906 from the 'Hyacinth.' The reason was D.D. No idea what that means I'm afraid. Possibly Dishonorable Discharge? He seems to have deserted a few times.

It all sounds very promising though.

You will find it like this

Moore Alexander 1880 — 1898 Service Records —
then click on the camera image.

HMS Hyacinth was one of three Highflyer-class protected cruisers built for the Royal Navy in the 1890s. Initially assigned to the Channel Fleet, she spent much of her early career as flagship for the East Indies Station. She was reduced to reserve in 1912 after a lengthy refit before becoming the flagship of the Cape of Good Hope Station in 1913.

Alviegal,

I am keeping my fingers crossed on this one .

His mother Margaret Moore nee Stewart was born in New City Road according to poor relief records I have .

I will check on his birth certificate but I do know it shows the date as 26th April 1880 but not sure of the address off hand but definitely the Kelvinhaugh area of Glasgow, as most of my family were .

I will take a look on fmp

Do you have his birth certificate? There is this that names his mother as Mrs Stuart, 860 (or 86a) New City Rd, Glasgow. 91 Yorkhill St has been scored out.
He was a rivet heater born in Kelvinhaugh, Glasgow and was a Roman Catholic.
May be worth considering?
