Seems to be quite a few William Charles Hitching born about the same time. Does tend to get a bit confusing. However, the other family links help: Peschevro etc...

Need skill here to solve this one! lol

Astra, is there an image attached to that 1924 marriage? Father's occupation might help to identify the right William.

The soldier in 1911 doesn't seem to be the son of William and Mary Ann - a bit too old.

This looks like the marriage of the Caroline Charlotte in the 1911 - one of the witnesses is William Charles Hitching - guessing her brother, so if this is the correct family, William was still in England in 1920:

London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921
Henry William Smith

stimated Birth Year:abt 1900
Age:20
Spouse Name:Caroline Charlotte Hitching

Father Name:William Louden Smith
Spouse Father:William Henry Hitching
Register Type:Parish Register

I think there are a couple of things that could be done to solve this.

Firstly, could you ask the lady when and where her father died. If he is the one who died in Hackney in 1969, then the family with mother Mary Ann looks like the correct one (the baptism date is very similar to the birth date in your first post - maybe confusion over them).

Secondly, FMP I think has Army marriages, so searching on there might bring up the marriage and the certificate should confirm William's father's name - the one born 1893, Southwark's father was Arthur.

I can only find one medal card for a William Charles Hitching:

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920
about William Charles Hitching
Name:William Charles Hitching
Regiment or Corps:1st Shrop LI, Machine Gun Corps
Regimental Number:9861, 49103

He does seem to have stayed in the Army after 1918 as the card show
" Clasps & Roses" with a 1921 date

The one on 1911 was in the 5th Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps, different regiment to those on the medal card.

I've searched the Army marriages on FMP but he isn't listed unfortunately but he may have married after his discharge.

That's a shame, Astra. So, it looks like that death cert is the way to go.

The information about when her father died she should have, but if it was a case she doesn't have this info, (death C), will that mean we can't say who is her correct father out of the other William Charles Hitching mentioned ? No other way... ? Fingers crossed she knows when he died.

Astra

Astra Report 13 Jun 2014 12:38

Keeping everything crossed that she does know.
It would also be interesting to know what her father's occupation was when she was born..............if she has a copy of her own birth certificate. That would tell us whether or not he was still in the forces.
Viola seems to have married in Berkshire so I wondered if the parents had moved as girls usually marry in their home parish.

Potty

Potty Report 13 Jun 2014 13:18

I think you need to get as much info as possible from her. Eg - where did she get his DOB from? Is it on a document or is it just from her memory? Any addresses where they may have lived. The names of any aunts or uncles. Buying the death cert I posted earlier might help - name of informant and relationship.

I have found the William who married Sophia Vickers on Electoral roll for 1964 and 1965, living in the Metropolitan Benefit Society's cottages on Balls Pond Rd, Hackney; Sophia is living with him, so he could be the William who died in 1969.

I could only find 2 marriages for William Hitching prior to 1895. The other one didn't marry anybody called Mary Ann. I'm not sure about this one...

Potty Report 13 Jun 2014 16:46

The 1880 marriage is on Ancestry - spouse Mary Ann Ringshall.

GH, I have spent hours pouring over Electoral Registers and can find the William with father William Henry from 1918 to 1924 at 8 Monza Street, Limehouse, Stepney. On the 1918 he is shown as either Naval or Military and is on a different page to his parents. Assuming he is the one who married Sophia Vickers, he then disappears until 1964 when he and Sophia appear in Hackney.

From 1925 until 1927, there is William Charles & Kate living at 28a Rossington Street, Hackney and from 1929 to 1932 a William Charles & Ekaterina living at 14 Lockner Road, Hackney.

Do any of these addresses mean anything to your lady?

Also, it looks as if both the William Charles we have been looking at were in the Army but only one Medal card coming up.
