I will ask her about what year he died, but if she don't know... it's :-( lol

That's a shame, Astra. So, it looks like that death cert is the way to go.

Astra

Astra Report 12 Jun 2014 16:00

I've searched the Army marriages on FMP but he isn't listed unfortunately but he may have married after his discharge.

I can only find one medal card for a William Charles Hitching:

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920
about William Charles Hitching
Name:William Charles Hitching
Regiment or Corps:1st Shrop LI, Machine Gun Corps
Regimental Number:9861, 49103

He does seem to have stayed in the Army after 1918 as the card show
" Clasps & Roses" with a 1921 date

The one on 1911 was in the 5th Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps, different regiment to those on the medal card.

I think there are a couple of things that could be done to solve this.

Firstly, could you ask the lady when and where her father died. If he is the one who died in Hackney in 1969, then the family with mother Mary Ann looks like the correct one (the baptism date is very similar to the birth date in your first post - maybe confusion over them).

Secondly, FMP I think has Army marriages, so searching on there might bring up the marriage and the certificate should confirm William's father's name - the one born 1893, Southwark's father was Arthur.

Potty Report 12 Jun 2014 15:28

This looks like the marriage of the Caroline Charlotte in the 1911 - one of the witnesses is William Charles Hitching - guessing her brother, so if this is the correct family, William was still in England in 1920:

No image available unfortunately Potty

Potty Report 12 Jun 2014 15:21

Astra, is there an image attached to that 1924 marriage? Father's occupation might help to identify the right William.

The soldier in 1911 doesn't seem to be the son of William and Mary Ann - a bit too old.

Need skill here to solve this one! lol

G007 Report 12 Jun 2014 15:09

Seems to be quite a few William Charles Hitching born about the same time. Does tend to get a bit confusing. However, the other family links help: Peschevro etc...

Potty

Potty Report 12 Jun 2014 15:08

Birth for the soldier:
Name:William Charles Hitching
Date of Registration:Oct-Nov-Dec 1893
Registration district:St Saviour Southwark

To confuse matters further, there was also a WCH b Stepney in 1895.

Yes, he did meet his wife while serving in the forces WW1, they made there way back here... I remember her telling me this. So, do you think his parents were: William Henry Hitching and Mary Ann, surname unknown at the moment, but would like to find this too.

G007

G007 Report 12 Jun 2014 14:59

I think there was a William Charles Hitching who parents were: William Henry Hitching, and Harriet Louisa Cottrell, so need to rule these out if the correct parents are: William H Hitching, and Mary Ann, her surname ? Perhaps he remarried ? Thanks for that other info Astra, yes, Winifred is her first name. :-D

Astra

Astra Report 12 Jun 2014 14:59

There is no sign of a brother Peter so I wonder if he could have been born abroad. William may have met his wife while he was serving in the forces in WW1. Just a thought.

Well done, Astra!

Hutching is the surname; Peschevro is the mother's maiden name.

Astra

Astra Report 12 Jun 2014 14:56

Peschevro is the mother's maiden name on the birth registration G Heather. The surname was Hitching.

Yes, she told me he was solider, of a high rank at some stage.

This could be the family in 1911 but I really think you need the lady's birth cert to get her MMN as there are two other men with similar names, one is a soldier in 1911 and I cannot find an obvious marriage in England or Wales:
