I have found out that the Cunningham name is Ann Petch's grandmothers maiden name, which i think could be the link. Ann's mothers maiden name is Ireland which is where i found her middle name but she could well have had 2 middle names.

You're welcome Amanda. I think it could be well worth sending off for a copy of that death certificate, I'd also suggest buying James 1902 marriage certificate to see if there are any clues on there, perhaps an address or the witnesses?

The 1861 census shows that Ann Ireland Petch had a brother John born c1851. There are a few trees on Ancestry that have given his middle name as Cunningham, although there is nothing on the records to indicate where that middle name came from.

There's a good possibility that this is her registered with that same middle name.

It seems that Ann Petch may have had a connection with Middlesbrough (where James was in the workhouse 1891) before he was born.

The Northern Echo of 25 April 1875 reports on an Ann Petch who was a Cook at the Queens Hotel, Middlesbrough who was charged with stealing 24lbs of dripping and sentenced to 14 days imprisonment. Also charged was a Thomas Brown who was a waiter at the same hotel.

Seeing as Ann Petch is a cook in hotels on the 1871 & 1881 census there's a good chance it's her.

There was also an Ann Petch born 1846 in Malton (not too far from Middlesbrough) but she appears to have married in 1870 so can probably be eliminated as the person in the newspaper article.

I looked for a possible marriage but not seeing one or a death for her :-)

It would be a great help if anyone could tell me if Ann Petch married or when she died as she just vanished as did James between 1891 census and 1911 census.

Yes i believe his birth cert was handed down with his possessions, i believe what i have heard is that sometimes the workhouses change their names. I have the date for his marriage but not a copy of the certificate.

Yes I do have his birth certificate.
He was born on 17 August 1877 at 19 Hill Street, Newcastle Upon Tyne. His mother is Ann Petch, the informant was his aunt Susannah Cooper who was present at the birth she lived at 38 Hindhough Street? Newcastle. The birth was registered on the 28th September 1877 in the sub district of westgate .

James Petch was my moms grandad who was woodman then but his birth certificate shows petch. On the 1891 census it shows hmi in the workhouse in the name of petch. Then he shows up again on the 1911 census as James Woodman married to my great gran Flora Ellen Woodman.
