I am thinking about taking out a short sub for this site. Can anyone tell me whether it is easy to use or not

I have taken a look and it asks which church....well I don't know the answer to that , so will I have to look through all of them for that parish?

The areas I am interested in are Cranham,Grays, Hatfield Broad Oak & surrounding areas plus Wathamstow (not expecting much from this one)

I used it quite a bit when it was free & found some of the things I was looking for.
Haven´t tried since it went to subscription.

Jax, before you take out a subscription look through the indexes for each of the churches. Usually there is one long established church and others are either nonconformist or modern churches (late 19th or 20th century).

Make sure that the records say Digital Images. The other items require a visit to the ERO searchroom.

I think that most of the Walthamstow ones are not held by SEAX although there are microfiches available at the Essex Record office.

EDIT 2014-02-06 They are now.

For Hatfield Broad Oak, St Mary Virgin is the one with most of the records.

The site is easy enough to use, the main problem is in getting to the image you want if, say, you are looking for an event on a particular date. Some mental arithmetic comes in handy in homing on to the right image.

For pre 19th century records it becomes more difficult as BMDs are sometimes separated and sometimes interleaved but if you are just browsing then that shouldn't be a problem.

Walthamstow is where all the gt grandparents ended up by 1900 so not interested in as much.

I noticed Cranham only had one church so may find something with that side of the family

I decided to just try it for the day for £5 and so far have found 3x gt grandfathers baptism, really wanted his marriage but doesn't look like they married in Cranham although both sides say they were born there :-(

The one I am stuck on is the marriage of Robert Kent born 1813 Cranham to a Mary Ann ? also of Cranham...they started having children in 1832 twins also baptised Cranham....I am beginning to think they did not marry now, she was possibly 5 years older than him born approx. 1808

Looks like I will have to purchase one of the younger childrens birth certs instead

There is a marriage in 1827 to a Charlotte, but that could be his fathers 2nd marriage

Not sure how much info you have got today but:

I agree that Charlotte is his father's 2nd wife as the dates fit with Robert Snr's Burial but Charlotte then married James Gates in 1831, she has 2 Kent children with them in 1841 but she must have been much younger than him

It is possible that they went to another parish if they wanted a quick wedding. Some London churches were noted for not being too fussy about residential qualifications.

Had a quick look on Ancestry but the nearest was Robert Kent and Mary Ann Grievison married at Clapham on 28 Dec 1833 (mistranscribed as 1834). The witnesses were both surnamed Giles.

Yeah It looks like Charlotte was Robert seniors 3rd wife (at least) as he was a widower when he married Ann in 1802

Charlotte had one son with Robert plus an illigit son in 1825....maybe I will need a longer sub now :-D

They may have gone to London to marry if he was only 18 when the twins were born...but both parents were dead by then so would he have needed permission?

That's interesting Chris...A pub.. I have been hoping to find an ancestor with one of those as that was my profession for many years.

I went to school in Hornchurch so know the area fairly well, HID works in Ockendon but he is useless when I asked him about the area, being a scouser.

Wonder who this Richard Boram is?? I have a son called Francis Boreham illigit son of Charlotte and also a son Henry who was born just before Robert died. I see it was sold onto James Gates who was either Charlottes 2nd husband or son??

Will have to download this will now, wonder if my poor 3 x gt grandfather got left anything?

I seem to remember St Andrews church being the sort of church I would have loved to have got married in if I was religious :-)

The name Lazell popped up a bit when I was looking through the Cranham registers.

Edit - They cut it a bit fine getting married in September...their twins were baptised the following month :-D

I have downloaded the will and it seems the sons name was Francis Boreham not Richard not that I have yet worked out what was left to who, or why this son got the house when the were 4 other sons and two daughters The wife got some pillows, blankets and table and two chairs (that was good of him) :-D and other children were mentioned that I had not come across, maybe children of first marriage??

Chris I have already added those but thanks anyway and have now decided to take out a months sub for Seax to find these other children of Robert and maybe a bit more

I have a James, Robert and a Henry (who died aged 10) with wife Ann

Francis (Boreham) Kent and another Henry with wife Charlotte

Plus now with the will there is also a William, Ann and Mary...not sure where they came from or with whom...off to look at Hornchurch now as they don't seem to be from Cranham

That 1851 census James kent and Francis Boreham are half brothers and James Gates is also a half brother to Francis who I think he sold the Thatched house to for £75 so all rather interesting
