CDU Report 21 Aug 2013 15:09

HiGlitterbaby,Maureen,Christinas.
What a mix up Some of them match . My lot from church baptism are
Robert Henry Phillips 1854
Annie Isabella Phillips [Eaton] 1860

Helen Mary Maude Phillips 1879
Robert Herbert Henry Phillips 1883
Emily Elizabeth Phillips 1887
Archibald Phillips 1890
Kathleen Lilian Phillips 1896

Kathleen swiched her name round to Lillian Kathleen in 1922 and sailed
of to Canada.
Did people change their surnames and what for?

ChristinaS Report 21 Aug 2013 15:26

As you've found the baptism for Robert Herbert Henry, I suppose he must have died so they called their next son Robert in 1886.

Did you know you can look at the church records for Medway free online on Medway City Ark.

Some people did change their surnames - for all sorts of reasons. One of the most common reasons for multiple changes was because they didn't want to be found.

Hi Chistinas Medway city ark is only 10 mins. away from my home by car.
So i will be down there next week to research the Phillips family.
Thank you again all of you for your help.

I don't know if this is the reason for the name changes. Though, how would they both have got away? I'm not sure that would have been possible.

I'll write out what I've found anyway, and you can decide. This is from the Criminal Registers.

Maidstone - 2nd July 1891

Annie Phillips - simple larceny (3 counts) - 14 days - afterwards to be sent to a reformatory school for 5 years (for each count) Sentences to be concurrent

Robert Phillips - obtaining goods by false pretences - 5 years
- simple larceny - 5 years
- simple larceny - 5 years Sentences to be concurrent

ChristinaS Report 21 Aug 2013 19:11

And this: Rochester Court - 9th April 1888

Robert Phillips - for felonously stealing a the Parish of Frindesbury eighteen live tame fowls of the goods of Henry Coulter (12 calender months hard labour) And for a previous conviction against Robert Phillips (8 calender months hard labour)

Phillips is a common name though.

Do you have Mark's baptism records? Born in 1888, so if Robert was at the church with him just after that date, he can't have been in prison.

ChristinaS Report 21 Aug 2013 19:15

Ah. I've just found another Annie Phillips charged with simple larceny at Maidstone. It was in 1876. But your Annie didn't get married until 1878, so it can't be her.

Sorry for tarnishing your family's reputation there for a while :-)

I have a photo of Robert Phillips in Canada with his sister Lilian Kathleen
Phillips my Grandmother and her second husband Harry lee. This must have
been in the 1940s or 1950s So would he be on a passenger list?

ChristinaS Report 22 Aug 2013 08:21

I saw Who Do You Think You Are last night as well. I thought it very timely. I wonder if the fowl taker was Robert Henry's father, as he was a Poulterer.

Reggie - I did see the information that you'd found about Robert Herbert Henry, which is how I knew he died as a baby. Once again, I was gobbledegooked somewhere between the thoughts in my head to what I actually typed out :-)
