Well, would you believe it ??
The wife of Frank Baker junior saw this thread and sent me a message.
I have had a conversation on the phone with Frank and my wife and I are going to meet him in the near future. My wife is over the moon about finding her cousin. They were quite close when they were young.
Would you believe it, they live in the same town.
I have been trying for years to find out about this side of the family.

Stewart you need to have access to his service records as unlike ww1.medals had to be apleyed for even if awarded so you will need to find his next of kln ie his son or whoever it may be to obtain his records .Stephen

war medal 1939-1945As with most Armed Forces Serving Personal during the conflict of World War Two, Frank Henry Baker was entitled to the War Medal 1939-1945. This medal was awarded to all full time service personnel who had completed 28 days service between 3rd September 1939 and the 2nd September 1945. Eligible personnel who had been “Mentioned In Despatches” during the War were entitled to wear a bronze oak leaf emblem on the ribbon. Those eligible for a campaign star, yet who had their service cut short by death, wounds or capture by the enemy, still qualified for this medal.

1939-45 starFrank Henry Baker was awarded the 1939-45 Star for operational Service in the Second World War between 3rd September 1939, and 2nd September 1945.

Frank Henry Baker would have been awarded this star if their service period was terminated by their death or disability due to service. Also the award of a gallantry medal or “Mention In Despatches” also produced the award of this medal, regardless of their service duration.

Fighter Aircraft Crew who took part in the Battle of Britain (10 July to 31 October 1940) were awarded the "Battle of Britain" bar to this medal. In undress uniform, a silver-gilt rosette was worn on the medal ribbon to denote the award of this clasp.

You could try searching "The London Gazette" to see if he is mentioned.

If he was only awarded a campaign service medal after hostilities ceased, it probably won't be listed.

I now know
when and where Frank and Beatrice were married
when and where Frank junior was born
I think I have found Frank senior on the 1911 census, born in Bierley (the town where he married and where his son was born) and the age is ok.
I am now going to pursue Frank junior.

Your wife can't apply for the records.............she isn't NOK, and is not entitled to any info about him

Try looking for the man's son..............see if he wants to apply.

Beatrice's Surname before marriage was Davies.
How they met before they got married I have no idea.

Yes, they had one child called Frank born circ 1940.
It is possible he lives in the same town that his parents lived in prior to Frank senior leaving England in 1944.
In 1944 Frank and Beatrice were living with my wife and her mum and dad. The father of Beatrice lived a few doors away.
Is it possible to find out what medals Frank was awarded?
Could my wife obtain them?
I can not obtain the service records because it is possible Frank junior is still living.
