It never occured to me that Ralph might be the off spring of the court ship of his parents prior to marriage.

IF it's him, there are no likely marriages on FreeBMD. Apart from two before Thomas was born, there's only this one, which is far too late, unless Ralph's parents didn't marry until after his death :
