Genealogy Chat

I think GR has the best chat - so easy to use.
There is Roots - http://www.rootschat.com/ - bit complicated until one gets used to it.

What I keep being asked is, are there any other Genealogy chat forums that are free and not particularly associated with any commercial company.

Particular interest would be any in countries outside the UK

You are joking it is far more structured than GR with all the different topics. And I personally find it very easy to navigate.

And it is FREE

And you can add pictures to your thread.

Yes you can google anything but doesn't account for expertise

Just thinking of the FREEBIES only and those known by members that may be useful.

Why not set up your own NanaSue?

I have come across a few US ones in the past, but they were 'state specific' really, and some Irish ones, though they have been small and again county based.

I think if it's any country where the main language is not English you would have to be able to read and write fairly fluently to contribute, or indeed to google it lol ( thinking of a Polish one I came across once).

There are many but as I have only recently rejoined GR do not feel I should be giving out the names of their free competitors, most of which I am a member.

I would have thought your enquirers would find searching in their own language a great help

Just tried Danish, French and Spanish ......and there appear to be a great deal if hits, although I cannot vouch for the quality,,,,

Suspect there are masses in USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand .... some of which I am a member

Personally, I prefer a monitored and regulated sites, otherwise, there is always nastiness, as often witnessed here.

It's amazing how some people just won't try using search engines.
Even when told there are good results my FH group just ignore me!

I find Rootschat easy as a site but don't like their chat forum - it's too fast for me.


I googled as recommended by Reggie and see that there are loads of genealogy chat forums available, but I've never ventured down that route.


GR chat boards are fine by me - I've made some good friends over the years. They are especially good when everyone behaves....... :-D

Rootschat is an excellent site if you are looking for some very specialised informatoion.

The people on the WW1 & WW2 are amazing.

Never bother with the chat on there.

I like the fact that you can post to a specific thread ie A county, census, a Country overseas (most are catered for) and many many others.

Easy to navigate and would highly recommend as another tool to be used in your research.

The counties idea is brilliant and I have not only had help but have also been able to give help in my local area.

In fact, a long time ago, I offered to help someone who was looking for something in my area, only to discover that I already knew her - just not under her board name. We had a laugh about that!

Their photo restoration section is excellent too and I've had some very good results from there.

It's the chat bit which flummoxes me..........it's far too quick and they all seem to know each other, so I backed out pretty quickly.......even though I can talk a lot too :-D


Edit.......so yes, GR is the best genealogy chat forum I have used so far.

There are several groups on Yahoo; but they tend to be confined to one county.

I regularly recommend Rootschat for specialisit information.

And on re-reading all the responses cannot see anyone specifically recommending only GR.

Just goes to show, how 2 people can read the same threads and get totally differing meanings.

PigletsPal, I think perhaps Shirley is referring to the OP, who has said a number of times that mentioning 'competitors' even free sites is not to be encouraged?

Apologies to all if I am wrong.

Again the advice to google seems best, as none of us can know what specific countries would be beneficial to those individuals seeking alternative sites ?

RamblingRose nobody has ever said anything against free sites. It was the promotion of other commercial competitors sites - versus GR that was a subject for discussion.........
