Just as a matter of interest, what dates do the newspapers on FMP and GR cover?

If you join Lancashire Library, you can see a vast array of newspapers on line up until about 1900.
These are held by an American company - Gale, but I believe they are the Collindale collection.

And it's free.
There's a link put on by Jonesey somewhere.

If you can't find his thread, try here:

I've been a member for a number of years - certainly since before I had a 'snipping' tool.
I just saved the articles - they tended to end up in my photo's, but can be saved in word if you copy & paste

:-)

Maggie ...............

just out of interest, you can no longer join the Lancashire Library from overseas, ........ that's been the case for at least 2 years

and I'm also not sure about how far they extend to the rest of England either.

It says (and I quote):
'Anyone residing in the UK may join Lancashire's library service. You can join at any age and it's FREE!'

When I joined, you had to give your 'local' library in Lancashire - I put Burnley - only about 250 miles from me.

Even if you live abroad, if you could give an address in the UK, you could join. My mum (who lived in Portugal) did - she gave my address.
In all the years I've been a member, no-one has ever contacted me from the library.

Maggie

I know that was the case for overseas ........ and as I said I did not know whether it also applied to other counties in the UK

all I know is that several overseas members tried to join a couple of years ago, and were denied ............

............ many of us do not have addresses in the UK that we can use.

I don't know about joining from overseas but Lancashire library isn't the only one that has access to Gale and the newspapers. Suffolk libraries have had access for free for a couple of years at least and I expect others do as well. If anyone is interested it might be worth asking at your local library.

I know that when I first joined Lancashire Library, several years ago,I had to renew some time later.
However they give you a temporary number until you receive your card.
That temporary number still works.

The Gale newspapers collection is not as extensive and doesn't cover much past 1900

I can access that online using my Essex Libraries card barcode and I imagine if you have a library card from any other county you probably can if you can see they have it as a collection from their website.

The search function on the British Newspaper archive is better on their own site than on FMP or Genes, not sure why this is the case ? you can tell it to exclude certain words which narrows it down and cuts out stuff you don't want (for example if you want Beckham but don't want football) not sure that function is on here.
