I'm trying to help a friend and I am having a great deal of difficulty in doing so, and would really appreciate some help or advice. I recently put up a thread regarding his occupation and thought I was on the right track, but kept getting mixed up with their occupations and various areas of birth, but it's just getting more and more confusing. So I'm starting afresh again and still getting stuck so I would really appreciate any help.

I am looking for the Miller family only;

This is all the information I actually do have;

James Lewis Miller married in 1931 to a Mary Hughes.
He was a 48 yr old bachelor and a ships steward, she was 29 and single.
They were living at Richmond Terrace, Liverpool at the time of their marriage.

As far as we know they had 1 child also named James Lewis Miller in 1931 Liverpool.

The family are Church of England.

I have tried searching the 1911 census for James Snr. as a ships steward without any luck.

I haven't tried searching for him aboard ship because I don't know how to or where to go for the records or indeed who he worked for.

They do not know if he had siblings. We know he died very early into the marriage as his wife remarried in 1940 in Liverpool S.

I have searched the records for a death for James Lewis Miller and come across this one which I think fits; -- James L Miller age 52 Liverpool N

Can any one help or advise where to look next.

Thanks Lou

Andrew

Andrew, I did find that birth, but I wasn't sure it was him as it's Chorlton and he married in Liverpool, do you think that could be him then?

Thanks Andrew,

I did look for probate but couldn't find him, so thanks for that. But isn't that address in Manchester?

I'd have thought as he died in Liverpool his address wouldn't be Manchester?

Ive just taken a look at it can't be him as he's left money someone else and not his wife & young son.

If it was a sudden death, he may have been away from home or in hospital.

My dad died suddenly on a day out in another town.
He'd never lived there.

Lou - probate records like the one Andy posted don't show who he left money to, it gives the name to the person who was granted probate or administration - usually someone who was capable of dealing with that sort of matter.

What was his father's name and occupation on the marriage certificate?

Kucinta Report 21 Apr 2013 19:12

In the probate Andy mentioned, James Lewis Miller of Ardwick , the probate was granted to Frances Agnes Robinson (wife of Ephraim Robinson)

Don't know if that helps to confirm or eliminate him?

MILLER, Mary Holland Daughter F 1 (17 MONTHS) 1910 Macclesfield Chesire

I can't see any other man with that middle name born around that time.

Thanks Gwen in Kent & MarieCeleste

Kucinta, Wow that's interesting. As far as I was concerned there was no connection to the Robinsons,

MarieCeleste,

That can't be him because James Lewis Miller b 1888/3 was a joiner by trade and the one you found was a parcel packer.

I couldn't find any match either, thought it was just me, as I kept getting both father and son mixed up.

Thanks guys for all your help. It's very much appreciated.

Sorry Lou - in your opening post you said that the man who married in 1931 was a ships steward? So it's the other way round?

~Looby Loo~ Report 21 Apr 2013 19:54

Sorry MarieCeleste,

I told you I keep getting mixed up.

The one b 1883 was the ships steward, the one born 1931 was the joiner.

are you sure you have got the right facts Lou

the only Miller with mmn = Hughes was born in 1932 (James I. on freebmd but it could be either L or I on the image)

the marriage of Miller to Hughes was of a James with no second name at Everton St John's. Does your friend have the actual certificate?

~Looby Loo~ Report 22 Apr 2013 05:45

Hi Lancashire Ann,

Yes she has the marriage certificate now and this is the full info she has given me,

James Miller (aged 48) – Joiner – married Mary Hughes (aged 29) on 28th February 1931. James' Father was James Miller. He was deceased at the time of his son’s marriage – His occupation was a ships steward. At the time of the marriage his father was deceased.

I can now see why I kept getting confused. I've been looking at the wrong generation. You see they had a son also named James b in 1931 and I thought he was the joiner she was talking about and his father that was the ships steward b 1883, but it's the generation further back.

I am so sorry everyone, only just got this clarified.

Hello again Lou - if that's the full info from the marriage cert then where does the middle name of Lewis fit in? Is it only the son born 1931 that had that?

On the 1911 census for West Derby, there is:

James Miller - crew - 30 - single - carpenter - Forfar, Dundee

Working for White Star Line

Hi MarieCeleste,

She's told me that on her father's birth certificate (b 1931) it states his father's full name which is James Lewis Miller.

To clarify

James Lewis Miller b 1931
His father was James Lewis Miller b 1883 Joiner he married Mary Hughes
His father was James Miller b between 1850 - 1860 Ships Steward.

This morning I finally found just 1 James Miller born within the time frame and IS a Ships Steward

1881 James Miller b 1855 Stepney Middlesex
Sarah Miller b 1860 Limehouse Middlesex wife
Albert H Miller b 1880 Limehouse Middlesex

The family are living with Sarah's parents Robert E & Mary Hayes.

I've tried searching for James & Sarah after this date but can't find a match. I've found that their son continued living with his grandparents in 1891 - 1901 but no parents around.

Hi ChristinaS

Thanks very much that does sound like the son James b 1883c the joiner, I wonder if his family left Albert behind and moved to Scotland for a while???

Taking into account what you found in 1911

I looked at 1901 and found this

Ellen Miller Head b

Ellen Miller married b 1856 Liverpool
James Miller son b 1881 Ships Carpenter
James Miller nephew b 1884 Ships Carpenter
looks like he's living with his aunt.

What do you think?
