Gwyn, Jan, rootgatherer, Helen, and Anne,

Many thanks to you all for all the help and advice you have provided, it is very much appreciated.

I will start working my way through this today and will check Scotlands People to have a look at the marriage certificate for James and also have a look at one of the other children's birth certificate.

Thank You & Best Wishes,

James

James,
with the little info available, SP can be manipulated to get the correct entry.
It is time consuming, but eventually the correct result is found.

Here's a wee tutorial

In the marriage section, enter groom as James Graham. year of marriage 1894.
=16 Matches
You already had an idea that the marriage took place in Ayrshire, so change your search accordingly... AYR
=4 Matches

To find the bride:
From the option on the right use ":SURNAME THAT BEGINS WITH" ... enter ( in this case) letter "P"
=1 Match
Keeping the P in place, continue to work your way through the alphabet for the second letter =U.
=1 Match

Eventually, you will arrive at PURSS and alter your option to ":Exact Surname"
=1 Match
Use the same process to find the first name and again = SARAH
=1 Match

Select up to 5 parishes on the dropdown list until
= 1 Match
Check each of the 5 selections individually, and again the final match is ..
NEW CUMNOCK
= 1 Match

Easy when you know how!

Brilliant Helen! I just never thought to check this - and yes, after all that, it does just say New Cumnock.
You little belter you.
Jan :-D

Helen

Helen Report 10 Jan 2013 22:48

I'd be inclined to believe Sarah and Susan are one and the same person.

There is only one match coming up for the surname Purss married to a James Graham ... the name being Sarah.

It's possible they married in the Knockshinnoch area of New Cumnock .. the marriage certificate might be able to verify.

Or maybe the location just might be New Cumnock .. the writing on some of these certificates can be dire.

brummiejan Report 10 Jan 2013 22:23

That's very interesting Helen - it says Susan on the cert, but must be the right marriage surely?
I wondered about this for location???

Knockshinnoch

There was a Knockshinnoch Castle colliery in New Cumnock.

I hope this doesn't throw too much into the mix. I do think another birth cert is probably the way to go.

I tried one last search and found these baptisms etc. Just in case the David and John above turn out to be linked. But I wouldn't be surprised if the surname turns out to be totally different!!

The birth certificate of another child of the marriage may be clearer regarding the place of marriage.

The marriage place couldn't just be Kilmarnock could it? Doesn't look much like it though!

James has had to go offline, but says Ann was said to be born in Annbank which he believes was in the Cumnock area of East Ayrshire in Scotland.

Still looking for marriage place...... It might start with K.....(?)

Hi Gwyn and Jan,

Don't know if this will help, I have found the family on the 1901 census for Scotland and it gives her father James place of birth as Ireland and Susan his wife as being born in Annbank in Ayrshire.
