Can anyone help me find the past residents of Berkeley House, 13a High St, Ingatestone, Essex. The house is early 19th century or older, I have tried address searches on many genealogy sites, but can't find the house or who lived there on any of the census years? Any help or advice on address searches would be very welcome.

Can't see it 1911. Maybe it had a different name?

I would like to know when the house was built of course but more interested in who lived there from 1890 onwards.

It looks as if it may have been called the London Road in 1881. Unfortunately Ingatestone is small enough that people didn't bother with numbers for their houses. Even in 1911 it seems.

Update: In 1911, London Road and High Road are both used.

I think it has been Berkeley House for many years, there is Berkeley cottage at the rear of the house which I think was part of the main house which may explain the 13a High St address.

The Blackmore history site seems to be the only info and photo I can find, I moved to Ingatestone recently and would like to find some history of this lovely house for the current residences who have lived there for over 30 years.

The 1911 Summary Books has a George Green living at Berkeley House.

In 1881 George is living with his widowed mother and siblings at (once again) Ingatestone St. The next household has Market Place as its address.

You would know that Greens Family Butchers still trade today so you'll be able to start there if it's in the same hands.

Green & Sons, butchers are in an 1894 Kellys directory but unfortunately no address. It names residents of Ingatestone with some addresses but no Berkeley House.

I just looked at the census image for George Green in 1911, this may seem like a silly question but I can't see a mention of Berkeley House or any house number? Am I missing something that tells you whereabouts on the High St the Green family lived?

It is in the Summary Books, not the individual householder's forms.

I was in Greens butchers this morning, unfortunately not the same Green family just a coincidence and the butchers shop is at 21 High St and is the location of the first Greens butchers more than 10 doors away from berkeley House.

The current residents.....if they are the owners.....should have the Deeds of the property, which will give them far more info than anything on line.

Have they actually asked you to do this?

Not if they're mortgagees, and does it matter whether they've asked her, Nicola is interested.

Thanks again for your help. As I have been interested in genealogy and history in general for many years, I thought it would be nice to be able to share some historical information with my neighbours about their house and discovering more about the history of this lovely village.

Some people do have a genuine interest in family history with no sinister motives!!!

By process of elemination, referring to the 1911 Summary Book and because the population is stable, I reckon Thomas Roger Barfield the woodcarver lives at your address between 1861 & 1901 censuses.

Haven't sorted 1851 or 1841.
