Hello All
How rare is it for a child to be neither Registered at birth and not baptised?

Thanks
Allan

Although registration began in 1837 it was not compulsory until 1874/75

So I would have thought not rare at all

Allan, just be sure to look for a baptism well after the birth year - children were often baptised in a batch with their siblings!!
Sorry to state the obvious, but you are allowing for wide name variation aren't you?

G/grandfather born 1872 - birth never registered but luckily he was baptised in 1873

But only found by accident

As a Catholic all names entered in Latin ie father John shown as Johannis

very true kay, maybe it was lost in transit, he had a sister born a year later and she is Registered which is very odd

Was his mother married at the time of his birth?

For people to help, it isn't necessary to post all the info you say you have,

Name and birth year/birthplace are sufficient.

Where have you looked for a baptism for him?

Very few records are actually on line

Hi Reggie
Hi parents were married in 1826 at Lamesley , he was the 6th Child born, i have all the baptisms of his sibling pre 1837, and all the other children that were born after him up to 1846. he is the only child that has no birth reg or baptism, it say on 1851 census he, was born Sunderland, i have had all birth regs checked from 1837 1842 in Durham & Northumberland he is not there.

Thanks

Some children aren't named at the time of registration and just appear in the index as male or female as their first name, but with the right surname of course

Were the childreen born after him baptised at the same church as those born before?

Have you accounted for other children with the correct surname born at the right time and area?
I have some who were baptised with a forename which was not their registered name.
