Have just spent 20 minutes trying to register for new family search. Recieved an e mila saying my account had been activated, but when I try to get into the records I get a message saying that my registration can´t be used on the new site yet. Anyone know why??

I like the new site. Whilst the old was available I used both so I got used to the new one but I do miss the IGI. J

Wisechild You do not need to register . As I understand it if you register you are volunteering to do transcriptions.

Redrobin has kindly put me right on the new arrangements........I would like to reciprocate by saying that anybody who has problems, like me, finding the appropriate Batch Numbers wirh which to search..will find them on www.cyndi's list .com.....

Thank you Syvia and JustJill I thought I was on my own there for a while :-D
Thelma...when I first joined GR I read many threads where one had to be very wary of submitted entries on IGI. However when finding a submitted marriage in Woodbridge, Sussex possibly pertaining to my OH's 3x gt grandfather, a marriage which took place well away from his home in Cheshire, I emailed the local archive library to check and they verified the submission was correct and very kindly sent me a copy of the parish record. From the censuses I knew that 3x gt grandmother came from Woodbridge and from the parish record 3x gt grandfather was serving in the army at the time and was in barracks in Woodbridge.

I find the new style hard to use also But what a lot of folk on here complaining dont seem to appreciate is that..its
FREE

Not only is it free but now the records are more up to date it can save a fortune. EG
Thomas Renyard England, Marriages, 1538–1973 marriage: 04 Jun 1846 Southampton,? Hampshire,? England parents: Renyard spouse: Elizabeth Ann Wilkins I already have this cert. but I could have saved £9.25!

I have put a new thread with updated info re the IGI etc.
I agree Eric and Thelma that it is free but sad to say there are still those who complain as to the reasons the LDS Church does FH.
If their conscienc bothers them, then I suggest that they stop using it.

I miss the old site because you could go from house to house along the street and pick up other family connections - however, the new site is fine but I do hope they bring the old one back as well

Ann - I presume you're referring to the old 1881 census. Here's an example transcription:
1881 Household: Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability John GARDNER Head M Male 62 West Moor, Northumberland, England Coal Miner Mary GARDNER Wife M Female 60 East Rainton, Durham, England Jane A. GARDNER Dau U Female 18 Moorsley, Durham, England -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source Information: Dwelling 10 Richard St Census Place Hetton Le Hole, Durham, England Family History Library Film 1342197 Public Records Office Reference RG11 Piece / Folio 4975 / 127 Page Number 15
I found the old display nicer - you could cut and paste easily, and click on the previous/next household buttons.
Although the coverage is more variable, you can still do this with the FreeCEN transcriptions.
Piece: RG11/2311 Place: St Clements -Cornwall Enumeration District: 14 Civil Parish: Truro St. Mary Ecclesiastical Parish: - Folio: 47 Page: 16 Schedule: 91 Address: Union St -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks GARDNER Henry A. Head M M 30 Gentlemans Servant Middlesex - Harefield GARDNER Sarah S. Wife M F 30 Cornwall - Kenwyn GARDNER Sarah S. Dau - F 1 Buckinghamshire - Denham However, only Cornwall and part of Caithness is available in 1881. Check county details for actual coverage of piece #s at: http://www.freecen.org.uk/statistics.html
FS also used to cover Canada 1881 and US 1880 - they still do but some years it's hard to form h/h's from the individual transcriptions.
In Canada 1871 on, you can see neighbours, but not always transcriptions - just the raw images. Drill down at the LAC portal: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/index-e.html to the census index links page: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-911.009-e.html
Here's an 1881 example using: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1881/index-e.html
Name: Glesson, James Sex: M Age: 46 Place of Birth: Scotland Religion: Presb Ethnic Origin: Scotch Occupation: Merchant Province: Quebec District Name: Montreal (City) (90) Sub-District Name: St-Antoine Ward (H) Division: 6 Page: 39 Microfilm: C-13220 Reference: RG31 - Statistics Canada
You can click on the image link and see: http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e327/e008161920.pdf (the image shows his name is Slessor - my g grandad's uncle) You can see the adjacent double pages by just editting the URL to: http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e327/e008161919.pdf or to: http://data2.collectionscanada.gc.ca/e/e327/e008161921.pdf
https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_STATES Here's an unrelated Slessor:
name: Wm. H. Slessor residence: Grant, Tama, Iowa birthdate: 1819 birthplace: Scotland relationship to head: Self spouse's name: Ketty Slessor spouse's birthplace: Scotland father's name: father's birthplace: Scotland mother's name: mother's birthplace: Scotland race or color (expanded): White ethnicity (standardized): American gender: Male martial status: Married age (expanded): 61 years occupation: Farmer nara film number: T9-0365 page: 463 page character: D entry number: 173 film number: 1254365 Household Gender Age Birthplace self Wm. H. Slessor M 61 Scotland wife Ketty Slessor F 53 Scotland dau Esebell J. Slessor F 23 Scotland son Nicter A. Slessor M 19 Scotland son Albert E. Slessor M 17 Isle of Man John W. Slessor M 10 Illinois, United States Archiebald C. Slessor M 9 Iowa, United States
The key items are: residence: Grant, Tama, Iowa nara film number: T9-0365 page: 463 page character: D film number: 1254365
Note the NARA reel # and the LDS film # agree in last 3 digits (the NARA reel # isn't on all censuses)
Now look up http://www.archive.org/details/1880_census or whatever year you fancy, click on Iowa, then reel # 365, then read online. Then edit the URL: http://archive.org/stream/10thcensus0365unit#page/n0/mode/2up (changing page & up bits) to: http://archive.org/stream/10thcensus0365unit#page/n463/mode/1up
Find a nice name on the page and look that up name: Lawrance White page: 498 page character: D entry number: 2572
So lets try deceasing the URL by 35
http://archive.org/stream/10thcensus0365unit#page/n428/mode/1up name: William Burnsid page: 481 page character: A entry number: 1490
I've only gone done by 17, so maybe there's 2 images per LDS page # - decrease by 35 again, and we get them
http://archive.org/stream/10thcensus0365unit#page/n393/mode/1up
Now you can click to adjacent pages - don't ever touch the slider bar in right margin - it's way too insensitive. Also magnify 4 clicks before downloading image (to get a decent resolution in downloaded image).
Some years, when you the initial look up on FS, you get to click on a free image to left of transcription. You can page thru these images.
