Hi does anyone know of a free site I can view the inmate at Greenwich Hospital Vanburgh Hill? I take it that it must have been a kind of workhouse if inmate was used when someone died I know it was a poor union hospital but would they still have said inmate? anyone please :-\

It was probably the infirmary attached to the workhouse. This was often the only healthcare the population of the area had access to. If a death was recorded there, it didn't always mean that the person was an inmate of the workhouse, only that they died there.

Oh right I did try to look it up as a workhouse but no luck years ago ancestry gave me free credits and I view an ancestor on there who was the one listed as an inmate and died aged 20 to 22 I lost all the notes I had and have never been able to find the list again which I saw her on? oh thanks i wanted to find out what workhouse she was in its Thurza but they spelt it wrong alot so Thirza born 1869 and died think it was 1891/2 Or 3 dont know if you need fathers name but it was John Dawson Thanks alot Jane

Thanks for that so she wasnt an inmate she was a nurse well thats a bit cheerier after she had been in workhouses since about age of 2 and in service thanks again Kath x

I think she WAS an inmate. It gives her occupation as nurse (domestic) which makes it seem that she went out of the workhouse to work, so she probably lived there. It does describe her as an inmate.

oh right well that makes more sense dont suppose it was that easy to get yourself out of the workhouse after all those years in there sad story but those were the times i suppose thanks Kath x I found her name in our family bible just her fiirst name and her date of death scrawled in a corner on its own

It was the Infirmary attached to the Greenwich Workhouse.

People would go into the hospital for treatment or childbirth and did object to having the ref to the workhouse on any certs when they were never in the workhouse. It was decided sometime in the 1920,that the postal address's would be given on certs for a hospital rather than ref to any workhouse.

That address was correct in was Vanburgh Hill, It later years the Hospital was the local NHS hospital called ST Alpheges Hospital . our daughter was born ther in the late 1950,s

Old stamping grounds for our family as many branches lived in the Greenwich and Charlton area of South East London.

Thankyou Shirley when I checked Thurzas father he was at the address St Johns South Side Greenwich and when I looked I think i'm right they had 4 wings for the workhouses and the south was one of them really interested in Thurza do you think I would be able to get a death cert for her to find out how she died and if so where would I get it from Jane

You can purchase the cert using the ref from

www.gro.gov.uk cost £9.25 with the ref given

you have to register ,free, and then follow the online order form ,dont forget to tick the box on the first page of the order that asks if the GRO ref is known. then all you need other than specifying its death cert wanted & her name is to put the GRO ref in the boxes where asked.

Thanks think i will do that curious to know what she died of and also where she would have been buried how they would have been buried if they had no money and were in a workhouse Jane :-D

You would probably have to check with the County Records Office to see if you could find a burial for her. Sometimes workhouses had a burial ground for people who lived there and other times the person would be buried in a common grave by the parish.

However I have found that even though my family had no great wealth - my grandfather was born in the workhouse and my grandmother ended up there when she had a child out of wedlock and was disowned by her family - they somehow always seemed to manage to bury their families themselves.

Thanks Kathleen seems like her parents and all the kids were in workhouses all their lives Thurzas grandparents and children were also however they were a family of tough males all worked on the docks so hopefully they managed it as well I dont want to write in the family bible dont know if I should? last time Thurzas sister in law did was 1891 but would like to add her details other than just her name as it is now Thanks Jane

I agree you really do need to see her Death Cert.

If she was in the workhouse from age 2 as you surmise and was then a nurse/inmate until she died age 22, I would personally, if she was mine, be very interested in finding out what she died of.

She could have had a disability of some sort, hence remaining there.

And as for the spelling Thurza is far more unusual than Thirza, in fact do not think I have ever seen it spelt with a U before.

Thee was a lot of TB around then . I have several death certs for young people as well as adults who died of TB at around that time .
