This is my Husbands Grandmother. We know she was born in 1927 Leicester. Mums name given as Lathwood. Cannot find a marriage between a Warwick and a Lathwood. We dont hink they did. May have links to Birmingham. I did find a Rhoda Haven marrying a John Lathwood in 1894. Not sure if its linked. Can any one point me in a direction. Thanks Clare :-S

It may be that mum was married before so although the mmn is on the birth certs she wouldn't have married in that name

That info is very interesting. I have came accross An edith Lathwood but not sure as one was Lilian Edith Lathwood 1901 and Edith Lilian Lathwood and also a Lilian Emily Lathwood, but on closer inspection they all seem to be connected to same family. on the census of 1901 and 1911. I think your right on the Birth Cert, I have a number for my husbands aunt so I feel a visit is required. Theres lots of Ghost in the family cupboard and strange twists so it will be interesting to find out more. Thankyou :-)

Thanks I found the census before but wasn't too sure, the names all tally with the census of 1901.
I have found Rhoda's maiden name as Haven and had a sister Mary Ann, mum was Ann listed as unmarried on c1881.
Thankyou so much for filling in the gap. Just need birth cert to confirm. Looks like we may have solved the family mystery. Well one of them anyway. :-D

Shirley, you are a star the marriages are correct and Edith married again to reg Hubbard in 1958 his son Leonard married Joan Rhoda Warwick. Which would have been her step brother. Another family rumour solved.
We are not completely sure that reg was Leonard's dad as we think Leonard was born malin which was his mums maiden name. Another secret to solve.

Shirley - thanks for the Death details for Evelyn
The birth looks promising. Leonard middle Initial is T, and born in Billesdon but thats all we knew. Marriage says Hubbard, The marriage of his mum to Reg Hubbard was 1st Qtr of 1919 which would have been two years after Leonards Birth. Could be is dad. Will check 1911 census for Evelyn Malin. Thanks :-)

well its unlikely Leonard has a father listed on his birth cert. Seems more likely Evelyn took Leonard into the marriage with Reg Hubbard rather than him being the father

I would doubt that Reg Hubbard was the father ............... you probably will never find out that name.
The only possibilities are 1) if Leonard was baptised and the vicar made a notation in the margin of the Parish Register as to the putative father, or 2) Evelyn took the father to court to get a maintenance order.
There was no legal process for official adoptions until mid-1927 ............... but there were many unofficial adoptions before that, of course.
It is more probable that Reg accepted Leonard into the marriage, and the child then took Reg's surname.
It is even possible/probable that Leonard did not know that he was not Reg's child because he was so young when it all happened.
