Hi Phillip, you seem to be doing it right. :-)

Phillip

Phillip Report 22 Apr 2012 17:43

Thank you very much for all the information. It gives me plenty of avenues to pursue. I am really greatful and apologise if I am not doing this the correct way.

I think the shipping records and the school record are the same person, not unusual for a record to be a year or so out on birth year. Birth registration was quarter commencing October 1888 which could well fit an August birth.

The school record gives his address as 32 Ivydale Road. His previous school was Vickery Place and his education level was I. He left 04/02/1998 with the note "removed to Epping".

There's not much further info on the card. He was a 2nd steward and it was dated 30/10/1929. He may have been on a ship called the Herefordshire.

I suppose it confirms he was still a seaman then.

Phillip Report 21 Apr 2012 16:02

It appears that he ran a Boarding house at 79 B/C Durning Road, Liverpool, he appears to have gone into Bankruptcy in September 1955, two years prior to his death. 79 Durning Road is now a Youth Club. I have been in contact with them and they have informed me that the club opened in 1962. They are checking with some older residents that attend the club to try and find out what buildings were on the site prior to 1962. If anyone has any ideas where I can check when he took on the boarding house as this may help me to find him in the Census?

Thanks for that Sylvia, I will look into both sites. Thank you BeverleyW, I now have a copy of that page from the Edinburgh Gazette, it also appeared in the London Gazette.

There was a posting on Rootschat, asking about this family ...... and someone has said that there is a One Name Study on Dunbar

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,217351/prev_next,next.html

just enter one name study, and you should be able to find it.

BeverleyW Report 7 Apr 2012 19:19

Found this in the Edinburgh Gazette dated 23.Sept. 1955 but there's no indication of what the entry refers to (I wonder if it's a bankruptcy notice)

David Mitchell Ernest Dunbar, 74 Rodney Street, Liverpool,
caretaker, lately carrying on business alone as a
boarding house keeper, at 79 B/C Durning Road, Liverpool

http://www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/issues/17327/pages/584/page.pdf

It suggests that at some time he had dealings in Scotland again.

Phillip

Phillip Report 7 Apr 2012 18:04

If he was a cabin boy and then trained later to become a ships steward, would there be records somewhere showing which ships he was on and when ? Would he have had a seamans passport/identity record showing when he started on a particular ship and where he went? Where could I check ?

brummiejan

brummiejan Report 7 Apr 2012 17:47

As he would have been 12-13 in 1901, it's just possible he was working, maybe as a cabin boy in view of his future career? Certainly can't see him anywhere at all on any census.

Sorry for that Jan, first time on this. Thanks for your help. Have tried the Scottish Census - no luck. Have Alexander Skene Dunbar on 1911 census thankyou. :-)

'Thats all the family, he was a Mercantile Marine prior to being a ships steward when he grew up. Believe he worked on ships from Liverpool to Llandudno and Isle of Man after the 1st WW.'

Looks likely he was possibly working then, at least in1911.
