I have my mother's birth certificate, my grandmother's marriage certificates - the birth certificate shows my mothers father as James Henry Mansfield however my grandmother's marriage certificate shows John Henry Mansfield - how do I determine if James and John are one and the same person??? There is no one surviving in the two generations I can ask. In addition to this grandfather was known as Jack... complications when researching. If anyone can help clarify for me it would be greatly appreciated.
Grandmothers name was Mary Elizabeth Edge born 10 June 1899

John's are often called Jack !

so the name James on the birth cert may just be a mistake by the registrar

Hi Shirley, thanks for your input, I have checked all the info you have supplied and was making the assumption that John was the correct name as he would have supplied the information at their wedding. Yes I have their marriage certificate. As I don't have any further information on the Mansfield side I was at a loss as to how to establish that i have the correct person.
Also marriage cert shows Johns father as Henry Mansfield deceased. How do I find him if Ihave no info on him. Your assistance is very much appreciated. Regards Lesley

Thanks Shirley, Johns age on the marriage cert is 23, marriage in 1919 so he would have been born in 1896 approx ... there are so many Henrys its mindboggling Cheers Lesley

Witnesses are Louisa Edge and BJ McKevitt - used the McKevitt connection to find Mary Elizabeths parents and to establish the validity of the connection. Not sure who Louisa is - sister, cousin, aunt???
Johns Father is shown on cert as french polisher and I have found Henry Mansfield french polisher in 1901 census with a son Henry... this could be them??? Have no idea but they were apparently based in London.

You have given me so much info thank you. How do you find information so quickly? Has taken weeks just to find one person, obviously I am not understanding the search procedure correctly, can you please please enlighten me?

Have found one Henry Mansfield in London who was a French Polisher same as on the marriage cert b/w John Henry & Mary, and they were in London. How do I confirm if this is the correct ones, how likely is it that there is more than one Henry Mansfield In London who is French polisher? This henry has a son just called Henry on the Census in 1901 - is it possible that they just use part of the name?

I am not sure that a John Henry would be known as Henry the same as his dad. The usual way was if a child has the same first name as a parent was to call them by their second name..

Also London is a long way from Liverpool where he married.

Had a look at the 1901 census you found and that Henry was born Marylebone and would seem to be this birth.

Was hoping to find a death where the birth date was given but this didn't happen till 1969 .

Hi again, Thanks for your searches. Will follow up on the birth Certificate for Henry Mansfield. I have spoken with my sister who went to England in 1969 and she met John Henry aka Jack so the death info doesn't fit. I believe he died in 1973/74 from what my sisters says. Also Mary E died around 1973/73/75 think it was not long after John. Apparently John Henry was from London. How & why he went to Liverpool I can only imagine because he met Mary and married her and her whole family lived Liverpool. Info I have may well be wrong as my sister was only 10 at the time she went to England and I always had the impression that Mum went back to England in 1969 & 73/73 because fo the death of her parents. Will obtain death certs and see how it goes. Cheers Lesley
